Aldine Once Again A Finalist For Big Education Award
The bad news is that it's old news, in a sense. Aldine has been one of the annual five finalists three times out of the six the awards been given out. They're the Chicago Cubs of the Broad Prize.
So they're due, right? Maybe it is good news after all.
"They have demonstrated great overall performance and have reduced the achievement gap among students," Claire Gendel of the Broad Foundation tells Hair Balls.
HISD won the first Broad prize in 2002, thanks in no small part to the fact their longtime spokesman was also working for Broad, according to the cynics among us.
The winning school district gets $1 million to spend on scholarships "to high school seniors
who graduate in 2009 and demonstrate significant financial need and a record of academic improvement during their high school careers," Gendel says.
Finalists get $250,000.
So as long as Aldine just keeps on keeping on as the Susan Lucci of the competition, they'll keep racking up the bucks.
