The Worrisome List Of The Missing

Categories: Hurricane Ike
The Friendswood-based non-profit The Laura Recovery Center has set up an online clearinghouse/utility page for missing persons and their loved ones. The public can both scan their list of missing people and download materials to make flyers for people they need to locate. The Laura Recovery Center (named in honor of missing Galveston County teenager Laura Smither) is working closely with Galveston County officials and the Red Cross.

So far, the Center has located 85 people, but at this writing, over 300 are still listed as missing.

Bob Walcutt, the Center’s executive director, tells Hair Balls that doesn’t mean that all of those people were washed away.

“I’m assuming that a lot of these people are in shelters and just haven’t gotten in touch with their families for whatever reason,” he says. “I know we had several that were from nursing homes or assisted-living facilities that have been taken to San Antonio.”

Still, the length of the list is worrisome, especially since dozens of the people on it are far below retirement age.

If you are looking for or have found missing people, you can either click the links above or call the Laura Recovery Center at 281-482-5723 or toll-free at 866-898-5723.
