Some Unlikely People Get Priority

Categories: Hurricane Ike
You, like most Houstonians, are waiting in a line, no-so-patiently, for gas.

You are waiting a long time.

And then, just as you are about to reach the Promised Land of the pump, and actually put some fuel in that nearly empty tank of yours, an HPD officer steps in front of the line and stops you.

He waves in two police cars to fill up.

That's okay, you think; police need gas. (Although you also might think HPD would have alternative sources of fuel.)

Then you look closer and see the two cars are not HPD cruisers.

Instead they are HCC cruisers.

As in Houston Community College. Which we were a) unaware had so massive a police fleet, and b) needed to do much cruising in the wake of Ike.

At any rate, you bite your tongue (in half, almost) and let the line-cutting play out.

Eventually you get your gas, driving away secure in the knowledge that the nearby very small HCC campus is safe.
