Some HISD Campuses Operating On Generators

Categories: Hurricane Ike
Most of Houston's schools opened today -- 120 campuses -- but not all of them are in tip-top shape.

Three schools are operating on generator power, HISD says -- Harvard Elementary in the Heights, Kashmere High on the northeast side of town and Westbury High on the southwest side.

"We managed to secure a number of large generators so we could pre-check air conditioning and other systems before power is restored and we decided to use some of them to power some of our smaller campuses," HISD spokesman Norm Uhl says.

No word yet on what campuses will open Thursday. Among the more well-known, Bellaire High is still closed.

The still-closed campuses are dealing with power issues, for the most part, rather than any extensive damage, HISD officials have said.

Overall, the district emerged from Ike in pretty good shape, they've said.
