That Strange Katrina-Refugee Kidnapping Story Takes Another Step

Categories: Spaced City
The case of Rhonda Tavey is a tangled one; a Good Samaritan involved in Hurricane Katrina relief now being accused of abducting the five children she took into her care.

An Amber Alert was issued, but now Tavey has returned to Houston from Dallas and been arrested.

From the DA's office:

Tavey, accused of kidnapping five children, has been arrested in Houston, Texas this afternoon. The five missing Alphonse children (ages 3-8) appear to be in good health and are being transported to a local Children's Protective Services facility, in accordance with standard procedure.

If convicted, Tavey could face 2-10 years in prison and up to a $10,000 fine. Her cases will be presented in the 262nd District Court.

Tavey has said the kids' mother was a drug abuser who could no longer provide a good home.

This is an ugly one; we hope it works out for the kids' sake.
