"Disgruntled" BP Workers Sue

While litigation over the 15 people who died in an explosion at the British Petroleum plant in Texas City in 2005 plods along and continues to make headlines, there is another legal battle being waged against the oil giant that has not received as much attention of late. A group of workers recently filed a personal injury lawsuit in Galveston County District Court arising from an April 2007 incident in which the workers claim toxic substances were released into the air at the plant, causing more than 100 people to seek medical treatment and decontamination at area hospitals.

According to the lawsuit, BP claimed that there was no evidence of any leak and “even suggested to the press that the entire incident may be a hoax by ‘disgruntled workers.’”

Six people are listed as plaintiffs against BP in the case; however, “many more workers at the plant are experiencing the same issues as are being experienced by plaintiffs, but at this time have chosen not to initiate suit, in fear of retaliation by their employers,” it is stated in the lawsuit.

BP spokesman Daren Beaudo said the company does not comment on pending litigation and the attorney representing the workers, Anthony Buzbee, did not return phone calls this week requesting comment.
