The Kirby Trees Are Gone
Or gone. Like a lot of the trees that line the road, trees that have been the center of controversy as a street-widening project gets into gear.
Channel 13 reports the trees "were cut down while you slept last night," which makes us wonder just how Channel 13 knew what we were up to last night.
Trees for Houston, the group that has been most vociferous about the tree-cutting, had no idea the city was going to act last night.
"We knew it would be this week, but that was it," Trees for Houston executive director Barry Ward tells Hair Balls. "I'm not surprised it happened at night even though we expressed a preference for it to happen in daylight hours...I'm sure the city would say there were traffic-control concerns, and less disruption for business, but I think they wanted it done without anyone watching."
City officials have said in the past that they intend to replace the cut-down trees with even-better trees, trees that will make the tired old live oaks look like twigs. The debate has gotten into nitty-gritty details of how many "caliper inches" of trees will be on Kirby under the old circumstances and the city's plan.
We're just sorry no one had the chance to chain themselves to one of the trees, or take up residence in a tree-house and refuse to come down.
