John Edwards: Still A Houston Press Exclusive!

For a while there, we were wondering -- as a reporter for the Columbia Journalism Review put it to us the other day -- "No offense, but why is it that the only reporter who has asked John Edwards the question [about infidelity rumors] is an editorial assistant from a Houston alt-weekly?"

We don't know.

What we do know, though, is now that the rest of the media seems finally open to asking the question, Edwards is ducking the press.

The Charlotte Observer reports that "About a dozen reporters and photojournalists attended a speech Edwards gave to an AARP Foundation symposium on poverty and aging in Washington. Afterward, he avoided most of the waiting reporters, at least some of whom wanted to question him about recent reports in the National Enquirer that alleged an inappropriate relationship with a former campaign videographer."

The CJR reporter who talked to us for a potential story he might be doing says that as far as he can tell, the only public comment Edwards has made was in answer to a question from Press editorial assistant Blake Whitaker at an ACORN meeting here. (It was at a press conference, of course, so the other media there got the benefit of the answer without having the balls to ask the question.)

The intriguingly phrased answer managed to sound like a stout denial without actually denying anything.

But so far, it's the only statement Edwards has given.

At least now we're not the only ones seeking the answers.
