The Somerville resident blames her stomach cancer on toxic chemicals emitted from the small town's century-old wood-treatment facility. Late yesterday afternoon, after a four-week trial, a jury decided that the railway company was not to blame.
Faust's case represented the first of more than 200 individual lawsuits now pending against former railroad-tie plant owner BNSF Railway and current owner Koppers Inc. Jared Woodfill, Faust's Houston-based attorney, plans to appeal the ruling and is preparing for the next trial set for March. -Todd Spivak
