Holland Chaney Is Richer Than You

Categories: Spaced City

Trying to figure out how you’re going to eat until your next paycheck arrives? Us too. Here’s a snippet from a Wall Street Journal article that’s sure to make you feel better:

“In a collision of the art boom, the wealth boom and the Baby Einstein approach to parenting, galleries and auction houses around the country report that children who aren't old enough to drive are building collections that include works by Jasper Johns, Andy Warhol, Camille Pissarro and Rembrandt.”

Niiiiiice. Nice and infuriating. As the article points out, Houston has its own little art collector, 12-year-old Holland Chaney, who, along with her parents, has loaned the art for “RED HOT: Asian Art Today from the Chaney Family Collection” to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. And MFAH director Peter Marzio thinks she’s neat. "The art is heavy -- it's not child's play -- but because Holland's parents let her talk about it, she has a confidence that's really impressive…She doesn't look at the floor and shuffle her feet."

The first of two reviews on the show, “RED HOT Business,” ran last week. And as reviewer Kelly Klaasmeyer points out, the rich just get richer: “… the real bonus to the family is the MFAH exhibition itself. Simply having a major museum exhibition and catalog of your collection raises its value incalculably.” Holland, if you’re reading this, wanna be friends?

Look for the next review installment, “RED HOT Shopping,” when the Houston Press hits stands Thursday. – Cathy Matusow
