Shot Fired at KPFT During Zydeco Program
For a radio station whose motto is “Radio for Peace,” KPFT 90.1 FM sure attracts a lot of violence. Last night, during a Zydeco music show, a shot burst through the station’s Plexiglas window, nearly striking programmer Mary Thomas.
The station manager, Duane Bradley, sounded perplexed about why someone would want to shoot a radio station playing Zydeco music. “Zydeco, if anything, is kind of happy music,” he told the Chron.
It probably wasn’t the washboards, fiddles and accordions. KPFT, which provides a radical antidote to the sleepy public and religious stations on the left end of the dial, has been attacked before. According to the station’s Web site, KPFT’s transmitter was bombed twice by the KKK in early 1970s.
Bradley doesn’t think the shot was an accident. As he told the Chron, “it's highly likely that, at some point, someone may have heard something that offended them and they decided to do something about it.” -- Russell Cobb
