Miss Pop Rocks: We Need a Patrick Swayze High School…NOW!
Does anyone know anything about the Burnet that Burnet Elementary in Houston is named after? No. What about Bondy Intermediate in Pasadena? Nope. No offense to Mr. or Ms. Burnet and Bondy, but I have a feeling if you named a school Patrick Swayze Middle School, people would know who the hell you’re talking about.
You would be talking about Patrick Freaking Swayze.
This is the man who taught John Travolta how to two-step for his part in Urban Cowboy. This is the man whose famous line “Nobody puts Baby in a corner” is now listed as the 98th most famous movie quote ever by the American Film Institute. This is the man who inspired the hip hop reference, “And I’m Swayze.”
This is the man who made Road House.
Now I don’t know what palms need to be greased or what egos need to be massaged, and it wouldn’t really matter if I did know, because I don’t have the capacity to grease or massage. All I can do is use this public forum to plead that someone out there listening who can make this happen does something. Patrick Swayze was born and bred here in Houston, raised in the Oak Forest area, and graduated from Waltrip High School in HISD. The man is legit Houston stock. And I can’t for the life of me understand why we feel we can name an entire toll road after some Hardy person, but we can’t name a small learning institution after one of the greatest stars to come out of our fair city?
