Broadway, Baby

Categories: Spaced City

Three terrific shows not mentioned in the recent theater season preview come from Broadway Across America.

In October, Avenue Q, a little musical about trying to make it big in New York City, opens in Houston. Featuring puppets and an irreverent story, the musical with hummable tunes won a whole slew of Tony Awards in 2004. The Washington Post said the show “rekindles your faith in the American musical.”

In January, Jersey Boys opens at the Hobby Center. The musical about The Four Seasons tells the story of how four working-class boys found fame and fortune while creating some of the greatest music of rock and roll history. Tunes like “Big Girls Don’t Cry” and “Oh What a Night” make this show a pop-culture favorite.

And for musical aficionados, a revolutionary new production of Stephen Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd slashes through the heat of June to make next summer a season worth looking forward to. For more information, visit www.broadwayacrossamerica.com. – Lee Williams
