Cheap Criminals

Categories: Whatever

My fool-proof plan failed. I figured if (there's my downfall right there), if I had credit so bad no one in their right mind would give me a new credit card and if, (another flaw), I kept no more than $37 in my bank account, surely no one would bother to steal my identity. I was wrong. Last weekend someone using a copy of my debit card spent $398 at Wal-Mart, $263 at Home Depot and tried to spend another $379 at Wal-Mart. The last purchase was denied because the account ran out of money.

My bank is being very nonchalant about it all - "fill out some paperwork; we'll get back to you." In the meantime, my house payment has bounced, by now my gas and water payments probably have, too.

I'm not mad. It's a pain, but I'll fill out the paperwork, send my mortgage company a money order and pay cash for everything else.

I just have one question: If you are going to steal someone's identity, if you got your hands on a free credit card, wouldn't you shop somewhere else besides Wal-Mart? Man, I'd be down at the Harley motorcycle place ASAP. Or at least the really good make-up counter at Macy's. Dang. Cheap-ass criminals. - Olivia Flores Alvarez
