...and You Thought the Property Tax Was Killer

So a few weeks ago I drove out to Katy to check out a new neighborhood designed with Martha Stewart in mind. I’ll admit I’d planned on showing up, making a few prison jokes and calling it a day, but the houses really were pretty nice – full of natural light and nifty accents. Way the hell out of my price range, but pretty nice. The only real riff I have concerns all the automated touches (fireplace and light controls, video cameras, electronic notepads) scattered about the mini manses, bringing to mind Arthur C. Clarke’s HAL or Ray Bradbury’s Happylife Home. All I’m saying is, I sure hope the future residents keep an old-fashioned pickaxe handy. – Keith Plocek
