Money!

Parade Magazine released its annual “What People Earn” report yesterday. The results of the 2006 salary survey range from depressing (foster-care recruiter Angela Pratt earned only $23,000, while Rachel Ray got $6 million) to the surprising (Arnold Schwarzenegger earned $0, the deceased Albert Einstein $20 million) to the just plain ironic (“life coach” Eileen Richardson made a whopping $25,300).

The report also went into the state of our economy, which, while seemingly positive on the surface, is actually quite dismal. Despite the fact that inflation and unemployment have dropped, the costs of important things like housing and health care are rising faster than wages. Almost 47 million Americans don’t have health insurance; the number of those working more than 50 hours a week continues to increase; and, to top it off, CEOs made an average of 369 times as much as an average worker. A bartender quoted in the article thinks, “The rich are getting richer, and the rest of us are fighting to survive.”

On the bright side, 2007 might be the year you win the lottery. Or you may be the next CEO of Haliburton ($12.3 million). And, if it’s any consolation, you most likely made more than the school lunchroom worker ($5,300). – Julia Youssefnia
