To Do: Ryan Thauburn Benefit

Categories: Spaced City
Ouch.
He may be an aspiring comedian, but Ryan Thauburn got some recent news that isn't so funny: Doctors found a tumor on a rib, close to his spine. It's been successfully removed, but it left the 25-year-old Houstonian with more medical bills than Richard Pryor's cumulative ambulance fees. So local performers are pooling their talents for today's Ryan Thauburn Benefit at Rudyard's. The lineup will include bands (Paris Falls, Vatos Locos, Rejected Unwanted), stand-up comics (Sarah Tollemache, Nick Aluotto) and improv routines. Money from a silent auction and barbecue will go to Thauburn's cause.

"There's no reason us comics couldn't pull together to help," says Paul Oddo, who's also on the bill. "We're often so [competitive], this is something that can bring us together." Thauburn himself will perform — and he'll undoubtedly be the target of some ball-busting. "Oh, I expect there will be some new material at [his] expense," says Oddo. While there's no official cover price, there is a suggested donation. And don't try to sneak in, because Oddo will be watching. "We'll make people feel like dicks if they don't contribute," he warns. "We'll just stare at you!" -- Bob Ruggiero
