Ft. Bend's Homeless Youth

Wanna do some good? Here's your chance:

You — yes, you! — are invited to a meeting this afternoon to help figure out the next step in addressing suburban Fort Bend County's burgeoning homeless problem.

Earlier this month a consortium of community churches, case workers and various other do-gooders cast votes on which specific homeless population should be helped first: men, women, families, substance abusers, the mentally ill or unaccompanied minors.

The overwhelming consensus was to build an emergency shelter for youths -- a nod to the Houston Press article published one week earlier.

Today's discussion will focus on fundraising, creating a business plan and identifying possible shelter locations. The 2 p.m. meeting will be held in the conference room at St. Laurence Parish, located at 3100 Sweetwater Boulevard in Sugar Land. For more details, call 281.980.9812. -- Todd Spivak
