"[Playing here] was a turning point in Bruce's career," says former Liberty Hall manager Mike Condary. "[He was] absolutely afraid to come to Texas because of the cowboy image." Condary says it took him three failed attempts before he could book the Boss because he assumed country music was all Houstonians listened to. True, Springsteen wasn't selling many records in the area, but after his first performance at the hall, Condary says, the rest of the nights sold out. Springsteen toasted the venue in "This Hard Land" when he sang "Hey Frank won't ya pack your bags / And meet me tonight down at Liberty Hall." — Dusti Rhodes
