No Tourists, But At Least We Can Fucking Park

The Magic Kingdom.

The New York Times reported Saturday on the growing problem of parking in San Francisco. A finite amount of space, cheap meters and outrageously expensive parking garages have led to desperate fights over available street spaces. In 2006 there were 28 attacks on meter maids, or whatever the PC version of "meter maids" is. Not to mention a murder in September after a fight over a spot.

The meter maids are protesting, asking for more back-up; the residents are howling, wanting something/anything to be done.

But according to local experts, it could be worse. You could be living in Houston.

"Any city that is worth visiting is going to have a terrible parking problem," said Gabriel Metcalf, executive director of the San Francisco Planning and Urban Research Association, a public policy center. "If you don't want it to be Disneyland or Houston, you're going to be experiencing a parking shortage."

Ouch.

On the other hand, maybe he meant Houston was just like Disneyland — a magical place where families have the funnest times of their lives.

But probably not. -- Richard Connelly
