Join us next Tuesday for an evening of tequila and tamales at Pearl Bar.
It's that time of year again, folks.

Across the country, Christmas trees are going up, lights are being hung and cookies are being baked. And here in Texas, we're enjoying one of our favorite holiday traditions: tamaladas!

For many of us here in Houston, December isn't December without tamaladas, or tamale-making parties, followed by a delicious feast. Of course, you could let someone else do the cooking for you and chow down on delicious tamales at the Houston Press's annual Tequila and Tamales fiesta!

Next Tuesday, December 10, join four of the best Tex-Mex restaurants in town at Pearl Bar for delicious tamales paired with tequila drinks to get in the holiday spirit.

Tequila Tasting at Sylvia's Enchilada Kitchen.
Several weeks ago Sylvia Casares kicked off the first of several planned tasting dinners with her terrific "comida con vino" featuring the wines of Morande USA. The second dinner (in what I hope continues to be a diverse and exciting series at Sylvia's Enchilada Kitchen) paired Cavalino tequilas with more innovative dishes from The Enchilada Queen.

Casares also made some welcome changes to the format of this tasting dinner, beginning with the seating configurations. Whereas at the comida con vino, patrons were seated in long tables aligned horizontally to facilitate a group lecture, at the tequila tasting, diners sat at small individual round tables.

The house in which the Casa de Don Julio event took place was grand, to say the least. Three stories, three balconies, and four terrace levels were some of the "wow" factors of the Memorial Drive home, the perfect setting for such an event.
Slowly but surely, I am making my way around the world via Houston's diverse restaurants and special events.

Last week, I was taken on a trip to India by way of Kiran's. A couple of days later, I had the pleasure of being transported to Mexico by way of Casa de Don Julio, a ritzy event put on by Don Julio tequila as a salute to Mexico's Independence Day on September 16.

Don Julio tequila took over a gorgeous, three-story Memorial Drive mansion, decked it out with swanky Don Julio gear and Mexican-inspired decorations, brought in Don Julio Master Distiller Enrique de Colsa to teach us about tequila, and had Mexican Chef Javier Plascencia (known for his efforts to revitalize tourism to Tijuana via his restaurant) conduct a cooking demonstration. Oh, and the company stocked the house with enough Don Julio tequila to get us from now until the apocalypse without any agave withdrawals whatsoever.
