Openings & Closings: Say Hello to Another Cupcake Shop

The Houston Chronicle reports that Newk's Eatery will be opening its second location in Houston at 20802 Katy Freeway in Katy on Saturday, August 2. The first Newk's that opened in Houston is located at Cypress at 25712 Northwest Freeway. Newk's serves a variety of large salads, a selection of pizzas, sandwiches and soups, along with several desserts, like daily slices of cake.

CultureMap Houston's Shelby Hodge reports that Charles Clark and Grant Cooper (Clark Cooper Concepts) will open a private event venue space next summer on Allen Parkway near Dunlavy Street, called The Dunlavy. Cooper tells Sandler, "It's unique, a location in the middle of a park almost like a glass jewel box sitting in the middle of the trees overlooking downtown. There's nothing like that anywhere else in the city."

Clark Cooper Concepts will be able to cater from any of their five restaurants at the 4,000-square foot lot, and the spot will be open during the day for to-go breakfast and lunch meals; it is expected to seat 150 people for a meal. But, that's not all. The duo also has a coffee truck, Mobile Mug, in the works to hit the streets in September. Mobile Mug will serve cinnamon rolls, too.

True Food Kitchen serves healthy, yet tasty, dishes in Phase II of BLVD Place.
True Food Kitchen officially opened to the public on Tuesday, July 29, at 1700 Post Oak Boulevard inside Phase II of BLVD Place. Along with the standard year-round menu items, such as the "inside out" quinoa burger and turkey lasagna, the menu will feature a few dishes only found at the Houston location. Fill up on kale and avocado dip, and two gluten-free items, the Thai green papaya salad with kelp noodles, and chicken tandoori kebabs.

If you drive by the construction where a Wendy's at 1303 Westheimer used to stand, you're probably wondering, when is the project going to be done? And what is it going to be? Austin import Doc's Bar & Grill was supposed to have opened in November of last year, according to Swamplot, but the project has been delayed and now it is expected to open later in August.

Aji Peruvian Cafe will open soon at 2825 South Kirkwood. The coming soon sign is hanging outside the restaurant, but the menu has not been posted yet. Based on the Facebook page, it's safe to say there will be empanadas.

Another Los Cucos is opening the Houston area soon, according to the restaurant's website. The next location will open soon at 1111 Studewood in Suite A.

Is opening a restaurant in Katy like shooting fish in a barrel?

Both BJ Brewhouse and Newk's are packed already. With little marketing. And I would think little in the way of great food. Mediocrity succeeds so easily?

* Black’s Market Table opens today at 11550 Louetta Rd, Ste 1000, serving Modern American and Southern fare.

* Hana Japanese and Chinese Cuisine opened last week in Missouri City. The restaurant is located at 6210 Hwy 6 S, Ste B.

* Brews Brothers, the beer bar located in Galveston, opened another bar concept yesterday. Hemingway’s is billed as a dive bar and is located at 904 Avenue M.

* Chowpatty Chat Co. opened its second location this week in the Mahatma Gandhi District. The restaurant is located at 5711 Hillcroft Ave, Ste A-3.

Another restaurant to close its doors in July, the Mexican cafe and bakery, Viva Itacate in The Woodlands (544 Sawdust Rd). The cafe's last day of operation was Sunday, July 27th.

Thanks for linking to CultureMap's story about Clark/Cooper Concept's plans. While I do usually write the restaurant stories, that one belongs to my colleague Shelby Hodge.

@bixlermtn I wouldn't say either had little marketing. Both chains promoted their Katy locations on their main Facebook pages weeks before the the openings. Also Newk's has a Facebook page dedicated to the Katy location that had hundreds of followers for months. Additionally, restaurants often reach out to the community, partner with neighborhoods or local businesses to offer a sneak peak prior to the opening to build buzz. They also provide discounts in the form of mailer coupons to alert potential customers in the area of the opening and enticing them to stop by. I'm pretty sure one or both of these businesses, especially since they're chains, employed some of those tactics mentioned resulting in the large crowds.

* Pho & Crab Restaurant opened in the former Zushi Japanese Cuisine space (14741 Memorial Dr) the last week in July.

* addicTEA Cafe soft opened its second location at 8588 Westheimer Rd over the weekend.

* Mexican taqueria, El Farolito, is opening its first U.S. outpost at the Portofino Shopping Center in Shenandoah (19075 Interstate 45, Ste 752). Central Taco will offer not only tacos, but tortas, burritos, alambres, pita stuffed sandwiches and rice bowls when it opens Monday.

Also Los Cucos has two more Houston area locations in the works. The one on Studemont will be a signature cafe, a first of its kind for the local chain. The other location currently undergoing a buildout is in Humble, as reported in May by the website, Humble Kingwood Atascocita.

@HTownCheapEats Coupons. Lots of them. Facebook and direct mail, especially BJ's which seems discount driven.

Likes don't mean much, by the way: you can buy likes. Newk's Katy location has more likes than visitors.

I think it's just Katy goobling up anything new along the freeway with an ever-expanding population---and they are chains with some brand recognition...so, it more that, but at least they do some social and community partnerships to build on this.
