We've Narrowed Down the Most Underrated Tex-Mex Spots...Vote Now!

Spanish Village is one of your choices for most underrated Tex-Mex joint in town.
I never thought I'd say this, but here goes: Maybe, just maybe there are too many Tex-Mex restaurants in Houston.

I know, I know, is too much of a good thing ever bad?

Probably not, unless you're trying to figure out which Tex-Mex restaurants Houstonians think are underrated, and you discover nearly every person who submitted a comment named a different restaurant. There's no majority vote here, just a whole lotta differing (but much appreciated) opinions.

So, as we do every time we seek out your opinion on underrated food and restaurants, we've narrowed it down with a poll. All of the restaurants listed in the poll got more than one vote. Out of the 50+ recommendations we received, only 13 of them were mentioned more than once. Madness!

As usual, you have until 2 p.m. on Friday to cast your vote. You each get only one vote, so use it well.

If you take issue with the narrowed down group of restaurants and want to duke it out in the comments, be our guests. So long as things remain civil enough that we can still go out for margaritas later.

So...Andy's. Not so terribly long ago, I might have been first on the board to stick up for the scrappy little cafe on 11th Street. It's like a time capsule, I reasoned; Tex-Mex as it was in the 70's. Simple yellow-cheese combo plates, a mild but savory enchilada gravy, the classic Velveeta-type queso. But I happened to drop in there for lunch the other day, first time in probably a couple of years, and it was terrible. The fajita meat in my fajita enchiladas might have been boiled. The queso was water-thin. The guacamole had no other ingredients besides avocados and zero seasoning. To add insult to injury, the chips in the basket were sad little broken things, the dregs from the bottom of the bag. It was a major disappointment.

I hope they make it better. I once again heard the old rumor that Someburger was going to close (which they denied, as they always do). Those guys and Andy's are keeping that corner of the Heights real while there is so much terribleness happening (specifically, the giant cube-shaped turd built behind the Someburger, not to mention the sad departure of Fiesta a couple of blocks up Studewood).

there needs to be a definition of Mexican, TexMex and MexMex.

Half of these shouldn't be on this list.  A few are well known and a couple are OVERrated.

Cyclone Anaya's underrated? What a joke, texmex via Dallas (for shame).

Spanish Village is a Houston treasure; there are so many stories lurking within those walls, from the old speakeasy upstairs to the intimate party rooms that hosted myriad celebs duing the 50's and 60's. You should interview the family sometime, it's a great saga.

Not sure if its underrated since its always packed, but El Patio gets my vote.

I voted for El Paraiso obviously since it's one of my favorites, but I'm a little shocked Tony's Mexican Restaurant isnt on the list.  That's a staple in The Heights.

Here are my definitions. I need help with the last one.

Tex-Mex--starts out with free chips chips and salsa; queso usually costs extra. The salsa is usually tomato based and is usually mild to medium hot. Tex-Mex is not particularly spicy but features cumin. Typical dishes include fajitas, cheese enchiladas, and quesadillas for the kids. Speaking of kids, some Tex-Mex places have free ice cream on the way out.

Mexican--includes foods you might find in Mexico. Spicier than Tex-Mex, and not afraid to feature nasty meats like liver, tripe, and brains. Mexican cuisine uses more varieties of peppers than Tex-Mex and a larger variety of vegetables.

Mex-Mex--not sure what this means, but Pico's uses the term to reinforce the notion that they are purveyors of Mexican food as opposed to Tex-Mex.

@Faundulay

But Spanish Village shouldn't be on the list since it appeared on both the Houstonia and Houston Press lists. It's not exactly an undiscovered gem.

Thumbs up but it's well rated, so thus not on this list. Montrose Mondays are the business.

The cheese also makes the difference. White cheese is Mexican. Yellow cheese is Tex-Mex. I don't see mole in TexMex.

@Bruce_Are @Faundulay

I'd say it is definitely undiscovered by most Press and Houstonia readers. And it's a gem.

I'm not concerned whose list it is on.

@Bruce_Are @Faundulay I'm just going by what the commenters said. If they think it's underrated, then whatever.
