Your number five pick serves traditional Tex-Mex and Mexican cuisine for the best of both worlds.
You know how we always say the Houston trifecta is composed of barbecue, burgers and Tex-Mex? Yeah, well Tex-Mex is clearly the victor, as more than 2,000 of you voted in our poll to determine the most underrated Tex-Mex restaurant in town.

And the same thing that happened with the barbecue poll happened again: The first and second place winners are separated by ONE VOTE. Madness! These two spots also got more than double the third place restaurant, indicating a clear preference.

Some of you took to the comments to argue that spots like Spanish Village are clearly not underrated and therefore shouldn't be part of the poll, and it seems like most people agreed, as even lesser-known spots received the most votes.

So who gets the dubious honor of being named most underrated among the best Tex-Mex joints in the country?

Here are your choices.

5. La Tapatia
Not only did La Tapatia make it into the Guinness Book of World Records in 1999 for creating a humongous taco, the local chain has also grown to six locations across town over the past 25 years. It's known for strong margaritas and traditional Mexican food like pozole, menudo and cabrito, not always found at Tex-Mex establishments.

Meh, I tried Chuy's once. It was just mediocre.

Chuys is overrated. At least in the yuppie crowd.

#1 should be Lopez's on Wilcrest off of Hwy 59. Been there over 40 years and still have to wait every night for a table. Cheese enchiladas are the best.

Hell yes Teotihuacan is the best! Their food is yummy and reasonably priced and they have bomb-ass margaritas. Also, who doesn't love the Aztec-ish mural in the main room. The dude offering the (whateveritis) to the gods has muscles no one has ever actually seen on a human before.

But, Andy's really? Gross.

I hear a lot of negative comments about Chuy's but they all are devoid of any sort of detail. I'm wondering if Chuy's detractors are for some reason especially inarticulate or perhaps that they haven't actually eaten there. At a minimum, Chuy's has good fajitas that can be made better with their Hatch sauce. And the chiles rellenos are pretty good as well.

Teotihuacan for the best tasting beef fajitas on homemade flour tortillas is why!

My first Tex Mex restaurant experience, very early 70's,  standing in a line with my parents and siblings on the sidewalk outstide of the original Los Tios on Fondren and Bissonnet (I grew up around the corner in Robindell) and how they would come out and hand out chips to those waiting for a table.  The place was mobbed it seemed all the time.  The only other TEX MEX joints that  that my Dad had taken us to back then were Felix's on Westheimer and Leo's on Shepherd.

It was WAY different than the Shakey's Pizza or The Chuckwagon, which seems like the only sit down restaurants we ever went to.  Except Vargo's, but only on someones birthday.

Two words why I love Teotihuacan: Mexican breakfast.

We love Teotihuacan (the SW one).  How many places make their own corn and flour tortillas?

Sadly, La Tapatia no longer serves pozole, menudo or cabrito, unless they are on a secret menu, in which case please share the password.

I suggest Guadalupana for pozole and La Mexicana for menudo, but I don’t have a place for cabrito that is not a food truck - any suggestions?

You are right about that, definitely mediocre.

@CR250 This is not on your sit-down restaurant list, but if you grew up in that area, you must remember the Texas Tumbleweed!?!?

@Usernamenotavailable Menudo is available on the weekend at the La Tapatia Chimney Rock location.  Fancy cabrito is available at Hugo's (good!) and Sylvia's (not good).  I'm also pretty sure they serve cabrito at Laredo Taqueria Cavalcade location.

@RoosterMcGee I kind of figure a list of underrated restaurants would necessarily include at least a big chain or two, since they are the ones the hipster foodies tend to write off without a thought. (I say this as hipster who recently bashed McDonald's with a broad brush.)

@RoosterMcGee

Because people like you go Applebee's?

What don't you like about Chuy's? Please provide a single detail that suggests you've actually been there.  My expectations are low.  You don't exactly come across as a man of letters.

@Bruce_Are @RoosterMcGee I have no clue what you're even asking me.  People like me go applebees?  what?  AND, you're saying I'm not a man of letters?  wow!

I've been to the Chuys on Westheimer a few times and the original one in ATX probably 30 times...all when others wanted to go.  One reason?!...it doesnt taste good.  Its fake food just like applebbes, chuys, etc.  You probably like applebbes though huh?
