Rest of the Best 2014: Houston's Top 10 Breakfast Tacos (and One Burrito)

Good coffee and good breakfast tacos are a match made in Houston.
9. El Rey Taqueria
This Mexican-Cuban hybrid also boasts a drive-through for breakfast on-the-go, as well as an excellent selection of coffee drinks (by that we mean more than basic black coffee, which is all that many taco joints have). A small coffee and a basic breakfast taco will set you back only $3.50, but why not go big or go home and combine the Mexican egg taco with tomatoes, onions and jalapeños mixed into the eggs with a chorizo taco for an even heartier meal? Extra toppings are only 25¢ each, so mix and match and delight in the fact that a smear of refried pinto beans comes on every taco for free.

It's all about the corn tortillas at Doña Maria.
8. Doña Maria
Though flour seems to be the norm for breakfast tacos in Houston, Doña Maria is known for its corn tortillas, which are thick and substantial -- none of those flimsy, fall-apart corn tortillas here! The simple chorizo and egg tacos are the way to go here, as the chorizo is perfectly seasoned and never greasy. It's good the chorizo is spicy, though, because the salsas are pretty mild, unlike at other taco joints that seem to aspire to create the hottest hot sauce ever known to man. Check out Doña Maria for the unique tortillas and delicious chorizo.

And the light of heaven shown down upon the Laredo Taqueria breakfast tacos...
7. Laredo Taqueria
There's pretty much always a line for breakfast tacos at Laredo Taqueria, but that's just because they're so damn good. The line moves quickly, though, ensuring you'll get your handmade flour tortilla with a smear of beans and egg and chorizo mix in no time at all. The green salsa adds an extra jolt to the already flavorful tacos (thanks, lard), and even though each is only $2, they're mighty filling (shoutout to lard there, too). Laredo Taqueria opens at 6 a.m. every day and even serves barbacoa for breakfast, if you're not a bacon or chorizo fan.

Villa Arcos should've been in the top 5 of this list!!! Why is it not on the list?????

Brothers tacos is not better than Laredos tacos and El Rey is disgusting shouldn't even be near this list

Absence of Villa Arcos -- coupled with the inclusion of limited El Rey and bland Chilosos -- means this list has zero credibility. Would take Taco Cabana over those two.

Porras on the corner of Market & Kress should've made the list, love their egg, potato and cheese tacos! Fresh hot homemade tortillas and the tacos are huge!

On the positive side, thanks for turning me on to La Macro, their chorizo is chunky and meaty unlike so many that mix it in with the eggs.

This list is sorely missing Villa Arcos (super bacon) and Sunrise. Also missing Fiesta Tacos on 34th and Gallo de Jalisco.

Laredo Is THE most overrated bfast taco in town. Soggy shit.

Sorry have to disagree....Sunrise Taquitos on Memorial is way better than Laredos....no steam table remade eggs here. Everything fresh and made to order. Also, Andy's Home Cafe on 11th St. Has som killer breakfast burritos! I had heard all the hype about the no. 1 choice, Tacos Tierra Caliente, and tried them.....awful tacos...the barbacoa taco was nasty! You get what you pay for-no, actually less!

I've had some really, really mediocre food at El Rey lately. I'm a fan of the place but sometimes it seems like they aren't even trying.

Yum, I noticed Robb Walsh's food picture! Is he still in the restaurant business? Or in Houston? Hadn't seen his name forever.

No villa arcos? Y'all trippin. Or are they gonna be on your best of the rest from the best of the rest list?

Tried them all, these places are ok. Villa Arcos is probably the best. Nothing beats tacos from San Antonio.

FYI, correction for Tierra Caliente - after reading this, the boyfriend and I decided to go try them out.  we've gone by probably 4 times since living in Houston to try to get them in the morning, and for some reason, they've always been closed.  Anyway, we got lucky this morning!  Just wanted to note, the choices are ham and egg, chorizo and egg, or potato and egg.  No bacon.  But OMG are they amazing!  Thanks for the great suggestion!

El Gallo de Jalisco (just two years ago named top 10 restaurant in the Heights by this very blog) has amazing breakfast tacos, which would give an OFBD to some of the tacos on this list.

Hello Taco Bell didn't make the list!?

@krissybolt That's weird, cause I went again recently to check it out, and there weren't any options. It was just eggs with chorizo, ham and bacon. No mix and match. I asked, and the woman in the truck said it's pretty much one size fits all. Maybe they were feeling generous today!

I love HOUSTON magazine and Peter Remington remains my favorite $ucces$ guru of all time, so I'm glad Robb landed comfortably! Thanks for the tip!!

@KaitlinS @krissybolt Crazy!  Today on the board it said eggs, then had a bracket and on the other side of the bracket listed chorizo, ham, potato.  The article you linked to from February has the author getting a chorizo and a potato, too.  I wonder if they just switch it up occasionally to mess with people?  ;)  Regardless, I'll be back!  Those were ridiculously good.

@krissybolt @KaitlinS That's so funny. I know that sometimes they do switch it up, but I guess I've always been on a non-flexible day. Oh well. It's good regardless!
