The 5 Best Brunch Spots in Garden Oaks/Oak Forest

The tortillas alone are worth the trip to our No. 5 spot.
In Houston, we're pretty serious about our brunch. Whether it be migas and breakfast tacos or chicken and waffles and loaded Bloody Marys, we have no shortage of awesome spots to get our brunch on. Keeping later hours and killer cocktails in mind, we'll be taking a look at some of our favorite spots around town. See the complete list at the end of this post.

This week, we're moving we're moving just outside the loop to the neighborhoods of Garden Oaks and Oak Forest.

Note: For purposes of this post, Garden Oaks / Oak Forest is defined as north of Loop 610, east of Highway 290, south of Tidwell and west of Yale.

Honorable Mention: Biskit Junkie, even though it hasn't opened yet, because we're just too excited about the possibilities! And Rainbow Lodge, which is just outside the borders, but worth the short ride inside the loop.

5. Frida's Mexican Kitchen Saturday and Sunday 8 a.m. to noon.

The price is right at this homestyle Mexican kitchen. You can get stellar breakfast tacos (complete with fiery red and green sauces) and a two-stack of pancakes for around 2 bucks each. Heartier plates loaded with beans, breakfast potatoes, and eats like chorizo-and-egg chalupas, carne asada, and sopapilla will only cost you a few dollars more. Tack on an on-the-rocks marg' and call it a day.

4. Wakefield Crowbar Saturday and Sunday 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

People need to know that you can play sand volleyball AND get a solid classic brunch at this laidback beer bar and eatery. Stop by for breakfast plates stacked with spicy huevos rancheros, build-your-own-omelets and grits, and fluffy hotcakes. Of course, you'll want to loosen up with a few cocktails, too. Try a $6 Bailey's-spiked Boomtown coffee, $3 mimosas, or a $6 house bloody served as spicy as you like.

Absolutely. The egg, potato, and bacon breakfast taco with red and green salsa at Frida's is the new benchmark.

Gamel Hem - I'll try some of the ones I haven't been to. But CB is a non return after almost getting into it with a muscle head. Who quickly backed off when I wasn't intimidated --

Those flour tortillas in the cover pic look undone :(

I thought the same thing. And they are are translucent due to all the grease. But for some reason Houston Press writers seem to think putting scrambled eggs on greasy flour tortillas is something special.
