Waffle House holds a special place in my heart, as it's where I'd go to
sober up study in the middle of the night during grad school in small-town Missouri. Say what you will about the grungy national chain, but the tiny Waffle Houses across Houston make great waffles (as the name suggests) and even better omelets and hash browns--whether you want them smothered, covered, chunked or "all the way." Breakfast is served 24 hours a day, and it's one of the few fast food places that still has a dollar menu.

This is southern cooking at its finest. Chicken fried steak and eggs, huevos rancheros and the popular country breakfast (not to mention boozy beverage specials during Saturday and Sunday brunch) make Natachee's a popular destination for breakfast in Midtown. While the whole menu is filled with hearty soul food, breakfast is served all day, and it's hard to resist the lure of biscuits with pan sausage and gravy for dinner.
