Openings & Closings: Ice Cream & Hot Dogs Are a Match Made in Heaven

Categories: Restaurant News

Summer is a time for ice cream and cold treats, and folks headed to Galveston for a day on the beach should definitely check out Hey Mikey's Ice Cream at 2120 Postoffice Street. The ice cream parlor opened on June 7 and features a multitude of sundaes with hot fudge and brownies, banana splits, and ice cream "nachos" made with crushed waffle cones. The ice cream parlor originally began in Middleton, Idaho, as an ice cream trailer, but the owner decided to move his business to Galveston.

After HtownCheapEats mentioned in last week's openings and closings report Mozelle's Cajun Seafood Market had closed, we called the business (no one answered) and checked out the website, only to find an announcement on the home page stating, "We are closed for business." The 126 Heights Boulevard seafood market provided customers with scallops, crabs, etouffee, gumbo and crawfish pies to "geaux." All of this was served fresh, frozen and prepared.

Look at all that cheese.
Fans of Chicago-style pizza will love frequenting the newest pizzeria in Sugar Land, D'marcos Pizzeria, located at 11102 South Highway 6. Of course, if you're not a deep dish pizza fanatic, you can still order your same pie with a thin crust.

Quaker Steak & Lube opened in League City on Wednesday, June 18, according to Syd Kearney of the Houston Chronicle. This is the first location in the Houston area. After customers pull up to the "gas station" restaurant, they can sit down to enjoy a juicy burger, like the classic All-American Cheeseburger, or Mac & Cheezburger, a steakburger topped with macaroni and cheese, Cheddar-Jack cheese and bacon bits. Throw in a cold root beer and a stack of onion rings for the ultimate greasy meal.

The first Chick-fil-A in Richmond opened on Thursday, June 19, at 5644 W. Grand Parkway South.

Thanks to commenter, HtownCheapEats, we now know about another food truck, or trailer in this case, that opened two weeks ago. The Gypsy Wagon serves up everything you want to eat during the summer: ice cream, shaved ice and hot dogs.

We also now know of several restaurants and chains that opened in surrounding Houston areas. Tea2Go, a tea franchise serving up all types of teas, from white to chai. If you're in Sugar Land and have a craving for tea, stop by Tea2Go at 11420 Dairy Ashford Road, Suite 100.

Katy residents can feast on a Dirty Sanchez at the newest Torchy's Tacos location.

The second Pandan Leaf: Exotic Desserts & Drinks location opened in Richmond at 5418 W Grand Parkway South, Suite A; sip on an Avocado Blitz made of avocado, tapioca, combo jelly, coffee jelly, coconut milk and shaved ice, or a refreshing Honeydew Smoothie. Pair any drink with a sandwich, liked the shredded pork with pate, carrots, daikon, cucumber, cilantro and jalapeno.

Katy residents can now grab a slice of pizza from Johnny's Pizza House, located at 24437 Katy Freeway, a burger at BullChicks inside the Katy Mills Mall, and tacos from the newest Torchy's Tacos located at 23501 Cinco Ranch Boulevard. There are now four Torchy's Tacos joints around town -- you're never far from a fried avocado taco or a Dirty Sanchez.

Ragin' Cajun on Westheimer was recently renovated and will hold its grand re-opening on Sunday, June 22, complete with tons of Cajun food and drinks.

Did we miss any openings or closings? Let us know in the comments section and we will be sure to include them in next week's report.

Beirut fine Lebanese Cuisine opening on 4105 Washington Ave pending city approval for the build out.

Grafitti coming soon on the corner of Union and White St. Right near where Julep is opening. Will be an Americana dinner/bar.

Ever since Swamplot reported about Grafitti's (2003 Union St) last year, I've kept an eye out on the build-out. I like that the owners tore down the walls in the front to create a patio. Hopefully the menu is good, although I think even if it isn't, people will probably come just to hang out after a night on the town.

I heard a rumor that the space occupied by Burger Guy's and Korma Sutra will soon become another restaurant, possibly an Indian or Asian restaurant. I haven't been able to verify if this is true.

Fat Bao is throwing its hat in the ring and opening a food truck. Maine-ly Sandwich was expected to open one prior to its second location, but I was told it's still in the works.

Other openings from this week:

* Sage County (formerly Wonderbar) opened at 2416 Brazos St, Ste B.

* Lone Star Taco Co. opened its fourth location in under two months at 3811 Center St, Ste F, in Deer Park. The location was previously Gina's Italian Kitchen & Pizzeria (owned by the same owners of Texas Taco Co. and Lone Star Taco Co.)

* The owner of D'Vine Wine Bar in Cypress, opened a cafe nearby yesterday. Hanan's Cafe, which also serves coffee, wine and craft brews, is located at  25282 Northwest Fwy (Cypress)

* Tha Personal, a food truck, recently hit the streets of Houston.

* Tapology Gastropub soft opened yesterday in League City at 2660 Marina Bay Dr, Ste 125.
