Last year's FPSF Preview Breakfast was a huge hit.
Take a look at the elaborate still lifes in any museum, and it will be clear that food and art go hand-in-hand. Paintings of dining scenes abound. Films and plays take place around the dinner table or use food as a plot device through which to move the action. Literature has an entire genre--food writing--devoted to tomes about the culinary world, and that's not even including cookbooks, which continue to be wildly popular, even in the age of Internet recipe archives.

One art form that doesn't seem to really go with food, though, is music. Sure, there are a few select songs about food ("Peaches" by The Presidents of the United States of America immediately comes to mind), but by and large, food and music don't really seem to have a natural bond.

Just don't tell that to The Gorillaz or local rap artist Bun B.

This year, as part of Free Press Summer Fest, Dan the Automator of The Gorillaz and Deltron3030 and Bun B of UGK are teaming up with Philip Speer of Uchi and Ja'Nel Witt, winner of Hell's Kitchen, to produce a choreographed breakfast service.

According to a press release about the annual festival preview breakfast, Dan the Automator will be playing original music at the event, while Bun B provides spoken word accompaniment. "Keeping in timed synchronicity," the press release says, "Chef Speer will head the five-course service with Chef Ja'Nel infusing her signature style in each dish." There will also be Absolut Texas cocktails created by Justin Burrow of Captain Foxheart's Bad News Bar.

It's part dining experience and part performance art.

The breakfast takes place at Eleanor Tinsley Park before the music festival officially begins on May 31 at 9:30 a.m. Seating is limited, and admission requires a pass to the music festival as well as a $150 supplementary ticket to the breakfast. (It's actually $132 online, but with fees, it's $150.)

So, you think the musical arts and the culinary arts don't go together? Think again.
