The Most Underrated Burgers in Houston...According to You

This is not an underrated burger. We all know this rocks.
We recently tallied the votes and revealed what you, our dear readers, think are the most underrated restaurants in Houston. There were a lot of votes, and the initial call for comments sparked much discussion about hidden gems, great, underappreciated food.

But now we've got a new challenge for you: Burgers.

Oh, we Houstonians love our burgers. I regularly joke that if I want people to read things I write, all I have to do is put "burger" in the headline. I'm only half kidding.

Here in Houston, we have a number of fairly well-established burger joints that most people will readily hold up as examples of burger perfection. There's Hubcap Grill, Bernie's Burger Bus and The Burger Guys (may they rest in peace), all of which have (had) bragworthy burgers.

But which spots out there don't get enough credit for their brilliant beef creations? Whose patties are truly phenomenal? What buns get you all hot and bothered?

As a reminder, here's our 2013 list of the best burgers in Houston. These are probably not underrated because, well, we rated them and found them to be delicious. We're looking for the best-kept burger secrets that only true enthusiasts know.

And don't worry, as some people did during the previous underrated discussion, about your favorite burger joint becoming overrun with diners should you dare to reveal its true awesomeness. We're pretty sure there are more than enough burgers in Houston to go around.

You've got a week to shout out in the comments, on Twitter or on Facebook. We want specifics, not just restaurant names. And tell us why. You might get a shout out in the next article. Each comment counts as a vote. I'll then count up how many votes each burger gets. If the votes are all over the place (as they were with underrated restaurants) I'll take it to a runoff poll.

So tell us: Which burgers in Houston are the most underrated?

Huskys on West Rd and Telge has a great burger and you have the option to build your own great burger the way you like it. You can choose from different types of breads, meats and toppings. How can it not be the best? They have a Hawaiian burger that's fantastic if you want something different.

Listos' burgers on Howard Dr are fanatic. I kept eating and eating. I had to stop myself or else I would regret it later. It's just so good, I didn't want to stop.

Bistro Burger at Hubbell & Hudson Bistro. Could be the very best burger in Greater Houston, but it doesn't get much buzz because it's in the Woodlands.

Everyone talking about people creating accounts just to vote for a restaurant may be true for some but not all. As one stated below, some may not know about this page until now.

With that said, Just burgers in Spring is by far the best burger joint in the northwest area of harris county. When you ask why it goes like this

1. Fresh daily ground beef

2. Toasted pretzel buns baked fresh

3. Seasoned fries

4. Meals include a drink

5. Exceptional customer service

And if beef isnt your liking, they also offer fresh battered(when ordered) chicken strips..

The other day, I ran into the "Flip 'n Patties" food truck (http://www.flipnpatties.com/) and had their "Puet Burger", which includes much pork goodness in the patty, making it a variant on a squealer. Very tasty, and props for thick-cut fries with the skin still on. No exaggeration: this place gives Stanton City Bites a run for its money.

Barnaby's (esp. the one on Fairview) has an amazing burger...and they'll customize it in any way possible for you. Plus you get some of Houston's best underrated fries to go with it...

Rancor at Petrol Station.  Meaty burger with relatively simple seasonings.  Incredible Angus beef patty.  And that special fried egg makes a fun mess of the burger.

Miss Piggie at Stanton's City Bites.  The porkiness of the beef/bacon patty is sublime.

Slap Yo Momma at Just Burgers.  No I'm not a sock puppet.  The pretzel buns are fantastic.  The giant donut-sized onion ring with ancho and tabasco drizzled over a well-done patty makes for good eats.

Stanton's City Bites, bacon cheeseburger.  Ground in-house, 1/2 pound, Slow Dough buns.  It shouldn't be underrated since Houstonia had it as the cover-burger on its hamburger issue last summer and Robb Walsh loves it, and it was on some TV show I saw (with Robb Walsh guiding the host around).  But no one here has nominated it yet and it wasn't on the Press list (tsk, tsk).  I have loved Lankford for over 20 years, but Stanton's surpassed it when I finally went there last year.  Here's the Robb Walsh link, which says it all:  http://www.houstoniamag.com/eat-and-drink/articles/top-burgers-april-2013/2

(sorry for mentioning RW four times; that's just wrong.  Kaitlin is doing a great job as lead food writer.  I remember when the first one in that chair was Alison Cook...and she sent me to Lankford that first time...)

Just Burgers, hands down! I'm partial to avocados so I like their Southwest burger. The seasoned fries are awesome too.

The burger in the picture looks great...but I'll bet it was $10.00 or more..???

Most places can make a great Burger for $8 to $15 each....how about those that make a great Burger at a reasonable price....?? Use to be a little hole-in-the-wall on Hiway 3 that sold a HUGE (two-hander size) on a Seseme seed, toasted bun, with about a half-pound large crinkle-cut fries AND a 20 oz fountain drink for $3.99....all cooked perfectly and fresh..the burger was so juicy you could not eat it in the car....so,please,how about great burgers you don't need to take a loan out to buy!!

Listos on Howard ave is my favorite burger place. I stop by every time I go to Houston. Everything is fresh- burger cooked awesome and melts like butter. I want one right now lol

This is hilarious. The Listos army of sock puppets is obviously intended as a joke.  Not so much with the Just Burgers sock puppets.  But in both cases there is no evidence that the owners are behind the charade so I won't hold it against them.

(I almost wish the fans of Listos weren't so passionate; it's a great burger to be sure, but I also appreciate the quietude of the place during breakfast and lunch)

@gimp_725  First of all it's in Spring and 2nd it's on a Pretzel bun. 2 strikes against it.

You really think Tookie's and Lankfords are underrated?  They appear on most lists of top burgers in the Houston area.

Thats why they USED to be there. I can offer you a 3/4 lb burger for $2.. but unfortunately one of three things would happen

1. Poor/low quality meat

2. Not real beef

3. I'll go out of business cause my operating costs will out cost my revenue..

The end..

Huh? Sock puppets? Charade? NOPE! Try a LIstos burger and you will understand! LOL!

@Bruce_Are  If you click on some of the commenters, you can see that they created an account just to mention a restaurant, which seems weird to me. But this will all go to a poll, and everyone will get one vote, so that'll make it more fair.

If you want to get technical, the USPS identifies their zip code as "Spring" with "Klein" being an "acceptable" alternate.  Tomatoes/tom-ah-toes really... two names for the same thing, pretty common for areas in and around major metro areas.

@eric.d.raines Just because the address is Spring, doesn't mean it's Spring, that's Klein.. I went to the HS across the street.
