$5 Fridays at Randall's: Discounts to Kick Off Your Weekend

Flash just one Abe Lincoln for these deals.

When you hear "$5," you might think immediately of Subway's infamous January campaign for discount footlong subs. But I suggest you redirect your thoughts such that your association becomes "$5 = Randall's," at least on Fridays, when the supermarket chain offers a series of promotions that all cost $5.

The deli and prepared-food deals are particularly appealing, especially at the end of the week, when you do not feel like cooking but don't want to splurge on takeout. For example, on a recent Friday, rotisserie chickens (normally $8 each) were marked down to $5; other $5 options I've observed include family-size portions of meatloaf, fried chicken, and macaroni and cheese. (So far, no $5 lobster deals, but I still have hope.)

Cereal, crackers, cookies and other dry food products are also frequently marked down via "3 for $5" or "2 for $5." The best bang for your five bucks, however, often comes in the form of reduced-price snack food. We all know supermarkets have no qualms about jacking up the price of chips, Cheetos and pretzels because they know we crave 'em, and often on Fridays at Randall's, those Pop Chips that normally run for $2.50 are 5 for $5, i.e., a buck a bag.

Well, that's still too much for a bag that contains more air than chips, but at least you're sticking it to The Man (a little).

These deals have not only saved me some dinero, but also, and perhaps more important, prevented me from reneging on that promise that always seems so easy at 8:30 a.m.: "Don't worry, sweetie. I'll handle dinner tonight."

For just $10, I got his and hers rotisserie chickens, avoided dirtying multiple pans, and made good on my vow.
