100 Favorite Dishes 2013: No. 49, Custard Sandwich at Petite Sweets
This year, leading up to our annual Menu of Menus® issue, Kaitlin Steinberg counts down her 100 favorite dishes as she eats her way through Houston. She'll compile a collection of the dishes she thinks are the most awesome, most creative and, of course, most delicious in town. It's a list of personal favorites, things she thinks any visitor or Houstonian ought to try at least once and dishes that seem particularly indicative of the ever-changing Houston foodscape.

Well, friends, we've done it. We've made it through 50 of my 100 favorite dishes. And you know what that means ... you can't quit reading just yet, because there are 50 more to go!
Just kidding. I mean, yes, there are 50 more to go, but I think finding and writing about (and you reading about) 50 dishes is reason to celebrate. And in the spirit of celebration, I give you: The Petite Sweets Chocolate Chip Cookie and Custard Sandwich, the entirety of which I ate in one sitting while writing this because I was so excited.
Petite Sweets is known for its custard and macarons, but, I learned recently, neither the custard nor the gelato is made in-house. No matter, though. Pair that custard with some of the shop's homemade cookies, cupcakes, macarons or whoopie pies, and you've got yourself a real treat.
The packaging makes it almost too pretty to eat. Oh, who am I kidding? I ripped that off in two seconds.
I've been hitting up Petite Sweets a lot lately in lieu of my usual sugary hangout, House of Pies, which is ever-so-slowly rebuilding after a fire in November. Petite Sweets has a totally different vibe, though, and I'm finding it a fine place to exceed my recommended daily caloric intake.
My obsession started with the macarons -- one in every color of the rainbow and nearly every sweet flavor imaginable. Then I moved on to the custard sundaes, but since it's been so chilly lately I've found a cup of frozen cream to be a bit much. Now I'm onto the cookie ice cream sandwiches, and I think I've found the perfect melding of macarons and custard to satisfy all of my cravings.
The cookies are baked fresh daily, and you can choose from a variety of flavors (recently I think I saw some gooey-looking molasses cookies) and either chocolate or vanilla custard in the middle. The sandwiches are all pre-made and waiting for you to pluck them out of the freezer.
They're better than the average ice cream sandwich because A. The cookies are crunchy on the outside and chewy on the inside, and B. CUSTARD. The custard center -- a swirl of chocolate and vanilla -- is so creamy and dreamy it almost tastes like there's a layer of frozen caramel or whipped cream between the cookie and the frozen filling.
So next time you're looking to celebrate a small victory, head on over to Petite Sweets for a big ol' cookie sandwich.
