Not cute.
It was my husband who spied the sign as we pulled through the Dunkin Donuts drive-thru. "New Smoked Sausage Breakfast Sandwich--have you had it?" Josh asked. We had just finished a workout, and were still in our sweaty sweats--what better time to zip through a fast food joint "just for coffee"? Talk about a recipe for weight-loss success.

I relented--"Well, it is for work ..."--and we agreed to split the latest, new-ish item to grace the DD menu. Some of you may remember the first incarnation of this item, the Smoked Sausage Breakfast Sandwich; it was so popular, they brought it back and added a spicy ("taste bud-raising") Andouille-smoked sausage.

Flip it for maximum aesthetic effect.
Let's just get this right out of the way: the Spicy Smoked Sausage Breakfast Sandwich is in no way aesthetically pleasing. Even the photo on the Dunkin' website doesn't do it any favors. There is something about that pleated casing; just avert your eyes ... or flip the sandwich upside down.

Let's go over the basics: microwave egg product, check; melted American cheese product, check; buttered English muffin, check; breakfast meat, in the form of Andouille sausage, check.

No one has reinvented the wheel, here, right? Right. But given the choice between this and my arch enemy (get it?!) McDonald's Egg McMuffin, I'll take the Dunkin' Donuts' Spicy Sausage sandwich any day of the week--at least until they take it off the menu. The sausage is both smoky and spicy, and it seriously wipes the floor with McD's wimpy little breakfast sausage patties. Sure, you have to pay with about 80 additional calories, but the flavor factor is increased by about 100. That's Fast Times math--you're welcome!

The downside to this sandwich is the mess--we're talking about one leaky sausage here. (Wink!) If you're driving while eating, make sure to keep the wrapper to protect your fancy work threads. (Our workout gear was much more forgiving than dry clean-only garments.) This is a big, satisfying breakfast sandwich--and it still clocks in at under 500 calories--that's worth every, single, greasy bite.

This sandwich is... the purest cholesterol. I think it outnumber the 500 calories
