2013: The Year in Houston Openings & Closings

Categories: Restaurant News

It's that time of year again. As we say goodbye to 2013 and welcome 2014, let's take a moment and reflect on the restaurants that opened and closed this year.

Unlike our usual Openings & Closings reports, this one is simply a month-by-month listing of which restaurants joined the Houston dining scene and which ones said adios. You won't find any extra details about the restaurants here, but if you click the links on a few of the restaurant names you can read more about them, including reviews and information on why they closed.

So, without further ado, we give you The Year in Openings and Closings.

I know this sounds crazy but I absolutely knew the yet another photo or honorable mention would be made to Goro and Gun. For a place that promised to open with an enormous bang, quickly slipped to a whimper and had to remake itself all within the first year, I have never seen a weaker establishment get so much press; even being placed on several 'best in Houston' lists throughout the year.  Either someone really owes someone money, someone is sleeping with a member of the staff or a few really good friends want to protect their buddies.

@DominicWalsh Maybe some of us enjoy following the ongoing saga. Besides, the Happy Hour Sazaracs are tasty.

Rather than exhibit bitterness & envy, why don't you tell us about a neglected favorite of yours?

@kmaher23There is no saga.  It's a mediocre spot that never lived up to the fanfare while being defending and totally supported by friends in the world of H-town online writers.  And yet, while dozens of other spots have been in business for years downtown, they are shaking their heads in disbelief that they can't get on a single 'best list' while Goro and Gun gets continual praise for...Sazaracs?

Bitterness and Envy?  Seriously?  How about a single article about the truth about G&G?  Just one.

@DominicWalsh @kmaher23 I'm not one of those online writers--just a civilian who sometimes drops by on the way home from work.  G&G got mentioned in this article because it opened this year.  Oh, and there's a picture. Nobody's saying it's the "best" here....

I'm just a civilian, not a writer. Why don't you write that "article about the truth about G&G"?  Put it on your blog. Or on Tumblr. Or sell it. If you're not one of the H-town online writers--why not?

Or, hey, write one clear sentence about a restaurant that's been unfairly neglected.  I'm all ears.

I did write a single article about Goro & Gun, and the truth is they make one of the best margaritas I've ever had, and the Happy Hour Southsides aren't famous yet, but I guarantee they will be.

I don't have any buddies there, but the staff is exceptionally friendly.
