Wingtoberfest 2013 Is Upon Us! Find Out Who's Competing for the Honor of Top Wing

Put your stretchy pants on, kiddos!
Ah, October. Time for pumpkin spice lattes, Halloween parties, cold fronts and gluttonous candy consumption. Also a time for Oktoberfests around the world (and most famously in Munich, Germany -- yes, we know the only official Oktoberfest ended on October 6 this year, but still). Beer, beer, lederhosen and more beer.

And what goes better with beer than wings? Nothing, my friends. Nothing.

Wingtoberfest is back, and it's bigger than ever!

This year, we're welcoming five teams to compete for the title of best wings in Houston. And, of course, each different type of wing will be paired with a beer from Saint Arnold to bring out the full range of flavors in the unique chicken parts.

The cutthroat friendly competition will be held at Social Junkie on Wednesday, October 23, beginning at 7 p.m. Get your bibs ready, y'all, cause that's just a week away.

Will Goro & Gun bring the Ol' Dirty Bastard Wings to the wing sling?
I read all of your comments regarding who you'd like to see compete at Wingtoberfest, and I took them all to heart. But then something funny happened. It seems that in the past two years, Wingtoberfest has been such a hit that we no longer have to petition for people to sling their wings at the end of October. This year, restaurants came to us eager to throw down against their fellow chefs.

So, without further ado, the competing restaurants are:

Goro & Gun
Little Bitty Burger Barn

Little Bitty Burger Barn is returning to defend its title from last year, while the dynamic duo behind Party Fowl, who won the 2011 competition, will now be competing against each other. Party Fowl included Lyle Bento, who now works at Underbelly, and Joshua Martinez, owner of Goro & Gun. From what I hear, the trash talk has already begun.

New to the competition are Boheme, whose giant wings have been thrilling diners at recent Test Kitchen Tuesday events, and Uchi, which might seem like an unlikely purveyor of chicken wings. When asked if Uchi could do wings, though, Philip Speer, director of culinary operations for Uchi in Austin and Houston, said, "Fuck yeah, we can do wings. What, are you crazy? Fuck yeah!"

So there you have it, folks. If you thought places like Underbelly and Uchi didn't do wings, think again.

As has been the case in the past, everyone is welcome at Wingtoberfest, but only the first 150 people in the door at 7 p.m. will be able to sample wings and vote on their favorites. I suggest you get there early. And if you're one of the lucky 150 who get to sample wings, congratulations, because you'll also be the judges. No local celebs here. Just you and your discerning palate.

Even if you aren't one of the first ones in, be sure to stop by for a drink at Social Junkie and hang out until we announce the winners, around 9 p.m. There are bound to be some feathers ruffled, some wings clipped and at least one dish that's just for the birds!

(I'm sorry, I can't help myself.)
