Christine Ha Pop-up Dinner @ MKT Bar
Saturday, 3 p.m.
1001 Austin St.
The MasterChef season 3 winner is setting up shop in MKT Bar for the afternoon and early evening in her first pop-up dinner. In honor of the last week of summer, Ha will be making street-food dishes that use season-appropriate ingredients. The a la carte menu starts with an inspiration from her winning first course dish from the MasterChef finale -- green papaya salad with beef jerky, jicama and candied peanuts. Next she'll prepare two types of chicken wings -- one batch caramelized in fish sauce (from her cookbook, "Recipes from My Home Kitchen"), the other smothered in spicy red bean paste (for her husband's heritage). Ha will then serve a Thai-inspired dessert made with coconut milk, cream, lychee, longan, green grass jelly, palm seeds, jackfruit and coconut jelly. Admission to the event is free (food costs $12) and it starts at 3 p.m.; food is served on a first-come, first-serve basis, so don't miss out on any of these dishes. MKT Bar has also paired several alcoholic drinks with the menu for an additional cost: Karbach Sympathy for the Lager at$4, Albamar Chardonnay for $5 and Maltz Joven Tinto at $5.
Karbach Brewing Co. Beer Dinner @ Central Market
Saturday, 6:30 p.m.
For two and a half hours, guests will feast on a six-course seafood dinner paired with different Karbach beers. Unfortunately, Central Market is keeping the names of the beers under wraps until the event, but they have previewed the menu for the evening. Central Market Cooking School staff will serve mussels steamed in beer, a beer-battered fish with coleslaw, roasted salmon served with a beer butter sauce and sautéed spinach, beer-marinated shrimp tacos, spicy seared tuna with scallion sticky rice, and, for dessert, beer ice cream sandwiches. Throughout the dinner, Central Market's John Butler will discuss the seafood used in each dish, and Russ Stephenson, the market's beer and wine manager, will discuss the beer pairings. A representative of Karbach Brewing Company will also be at the dinner to talk about the brewery's beers and answer questions. If you love seafood and you love beer, then this $65 dinner is for you.
