The 5 Best Things to Eat at Buc-ee's, the Convenience Store of the Gods

The New Braunfels Buc-ee's is the largest convenience store in the world. Because we're Texas.
Because my family lives in both Corpus and the Hill Country, I find myself on the road to and from Houston frequently. During those long, boring drives through south and central Texas, there is one thing that shines like a beacon among the run-down gas stations and cows and oil rigs: Buc-ee's.

Buc-ee's is the king of Texas convenience stores. I know that at Buc-ee's, there will always be enough gas pumps, enough parking spaces, enough toilets and more food than I could ever eat. Plus you can do most of your grocery shopping and all of your holiday gift buys there (if the people on your list are into bedazzled cowboy paraphernalia). The chain's bathrooms are consistently named the best in America, and I suspect it's one of the few places on earth where you can buy pecan pie in a jar, a camo onesie, a glittery decorative vase and windshield wiper fluid all in one convenient location.

I go to Buc-ee's for the food, though. The company makes most of it in-house, and it provides a great alternative to the usual convenience store fare. The beef jerky is some of the best around (no joke), the fudge is rich and delicious, and the wall of gummy candy looks like something out of Willy Wonka's shop.

So next time you're on a road trip in Texas, look for the giant beaver signs and stop by Buc-ee's for some tasty treats. It can be overwhelming, for sure, but to help you out, here's a list of the five best things worth checking out at the Texas-sized convenience store.

5. Buc-ee's Pecan Cinnamon Roll Crunch Popcorn

There's caramel popcorn, and then there's pecan cinnamon roll popcorn. Always wished you could get that same great cinnamon roll flavor without eating a calorie-filled pastry? Buc-ee's, purveyor of both ICEEs and dreams, makes that possible! I mean, sort of. The popcorn isn't exactly healthy, but it does taste incredibly similar to an actual pecan cinnamon roll, only crunchier. Plus, trying to get the popcorn and sugar coating out of your teeth will keep you busy in the car for hours.

4. Buc-ee's Southwest Cobb Salad

I know, a convenience store salad sounds gross, but this one is totally legit. Buc-ee's uses fresh spinach and tomatoes, grilled chicken, black beans and a house-made corn salsa in their Southwest Cobb, then the whole thing is topped off with Monterey Jack cheese. It's maybe one of the healthiest things you can get at a convenience store, which is a welcome relief after living off Doritos and Skittles all day ('cause apparently I only drive in the 1990s...).

The new one in TX city has it's on BBQ stand right in the middle of the store. Their chopped beef sammiches are amazing. Sausage on a stick! This is my favorite Bucees ever b/c since they are on the way to Galveston, they are fully stocked with beach type supplies, all kinds of goodies! I cant say I agree with this list too much. My top 5- #1 chipmento cheese #2 sausage cheese trays #3 the jerky #4 fudge #5 chicken salad spread. so that's 2 out of their 5 I love.

Only been to the Bastrop Buc-ee's. No tables to eat their glorious food though...

Is it the same deal at the other locations? If so would it kill the owners to add some picnic tables?

Who says you need to take a road trip? I live in Pearland, and frequent the Buc-ee's on Shadow Creek Parkway near 288... Often. :D

Bohemian is used in this Jerky name in reference to Czechs ( Bohemian's )  and Czech settlers in Central Texas.   Before there was the Czech Republic and Czechoslovakia there was Bohemia and Moravia.  Texas Czechs are called Bohunks.  We drink Bohemian Martinis ( Shiner Bock poured over Sonic ice, with salt and lemon) and eat Bohemian Lobster Tails ( smoked pork ribs).  the Bohemian in this reference has nothing to do with the word bohemianism or a bohemian lifestyle.

Also here is a tip on Buc-ees jerky. If the flavor you are wanting is available in the vacuum sealed packs buy it that way. The jerky sitting out on the counters and in the open coolers, while it's still fresh, has been sitting there in the open for a few hours and is usually drier in texture and taste than the fresh vacuum sealed selections that have retained all the original moisture.

my favorite part was how "healthy" got dropped in the writeups for the first two items -- caramel corn and a cobb salad.

Their jerky is good but if you drive south to Corpus all the time, I'd hit up Praseks. Way better jerky.

If you knew their corporate culture, you wouldn't be giving them free press.

Just as  @paval points out. The majority of Buc-ees private label foods are sourced from vendors who sell either privately under their own label or are in business to produce private label foods for road side stops. The canned goods in the aisles can be bought under many different labels at most convenience/tourist stops. Just as the nut mixes can also. The sausage is made by JR's on 59 just outside Wharton. The stuffed chickens are made here in Houston by La Boucherie. The jerky looks like Praseks but could be from elsewhere, possibly JR's again. The fudge I'm not sure of. It may actually be made in each store. But that is suspect because most stores who produce fudge in-house like to make a large production of the cooling process. I don't recall ever seeing that in all of our most frequent Buc-ees stops.

However none of that is a negative. I love Buc-ees and the fact that all of these items are available under one roof is applaudable. I can fill up with gas while using a clean restroom. Get a large glass of some of the freshest unsweetened iced tea on the road and a pack of Guadalajara Mix and keep to my destination.

@Alexander_Bites I know the fudge is made in house at the flagship stores, which are the larger ones. The jerky isn't always made start to finish in the stores, but the man at the jerky counter told me that some of it is cured there. The Beaver Nuggets are probably from China.

@gossamersixteen Yeah, I know little about the corporate culture either, except that a manager told me I wasn't allowed to take photos without going through corporate (which I obviously did anyway). The employees always seem happy though.
