The 5 Best Things to Eat or Drink this Weekend: Tequila Fiesta, Opus One Wine Dinner, an Ice Cream Social & More!
If you're still mourning the fact that National Tequila Day is only one day a year, dry your pretty little eyes, 'cause Pico's Mex-Mex is still celebrating! Their three-day tequila fiesta started on Wednesday, but it's not too late to score some drink specials and tequila-inspired food including tequila-flamed fajitas lit tableside or a slice of sinful homemade tequila key lime pie. "Managers' Signature Blend Margaritas" are only $7, but if you want something a little more exotic, Pico's has 15 other margaritas on its menu to choose from.
Opus One Wine Dinner with Winemaker Michael Silacci @ Perry's Steakhouse and Grille
Friday, 7 to 10:30 p.m.
9827 Katy Freeway
Opus One Winery in Napa is lending its winemaker Michael Silacci to Houston for an evening to create an elegant food and wine pairing at Perry's. The six-course meal will (including a reception and an intermezzo) set you back $350 a person, but the food ought to be pretty good, and Silacci will regale you with stories of the wine business. The dinner includes five wine-pairings of course, and because Opus One makes only one wine a year (hence the name) the older 2004 and 2005 bottles are pretty special. The most recent available Opus One wine from 2009 has a retail price of $225.
Urban Harvest's Fall Vegetable Gardening @ University of Houston Science and Engineering Center
Saturday, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
3601 Cullen Boulevard, Room 103
It may still be unbearably hot outside, but it's time to start thinking about your fall garden! Urban Harvest is hosting a fall vegetable gardening class at the University of Houston's Science and Engineering Center on Saturday for those of
you us who might think we have black thumbs. According to the event website, the class will teach "when and where to plant, soil preparation, seed germination and transplanting a long list of vegetables." Many of these plants can evidently be grown in pots on a porch or patio, so there's no need to have access to ample gardening space. Tickets are $36.
Buffalo Bayou Brewery is generally only open from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturdays, but this Saturday is special. Buffalo Bayou is teaming up with the guys from Phamily Bites food truck to host a pig roast in honor of Chef Van Pham's birthday month. Pham is bringing along grillmaster Quy to take care of the pig while Yellow Echo and Second Lovers provide musical accompaniment. Buffalo will be serving its insanely good Gingerbread Stout as well as frozen shandies with hibiscus. You don't need tickets to get in, but the food and drinks will be priced à la carte.
Ice Cream Social @ Whole Foods
Saturday, 2 to 5 p.m.
Beat the heat with an ice cream social at Whole Foods! The grocery chain is promising "pops from local vendors, organic ice creams, fair trade fruits and toppings, and more." The ice-cream loving hippie inside of me is jumping for joy. All Houston Whole Foods locations will be serving up So Delicious and Three Twins ice cream at stations throughout the store. Best of all? It's free! Events like this totally bring me back to my college days when I used to eat lunch at Central Market with all the free samples. Free dessert on Saturday? Don't mind if I do!
