Settlers of Catan and smoothies, anyone?

So you can't stay in the sand and surf over in Galveston all the time. When you're ready to take a break, here are five (relatively) new Galveston restaurants I'm looking forward to trying this summer.

5. Number 13. Scheduled to open in late summer 2013, Number 13 is an island-themed restaurant that supposedly will offer steaks, quality gulf seafood and "decadent desserts" (cronut bread pudding?). I'm eager also to see how the "island theme" manifests itself. I hope tiki cocktails are involved.

4. Gumbo Diner. Gumbo Diner, the newest member of the family of eating establishments run by Galveston Restaurant Group, offers traditional New Orleans fare: po-boys, char-grilled oysters, and of course, gumbo. Admittedly, I'm more excited, however, to try its daily blue-plate specials, such as Wednesday's chicken and dumplings and Friday's shrimp and grits with garlic bread.

3. The Waterman Restaurant. Technically a "new" establishment, though not new to Galveston, The Waterman Restaurant was destroyed in 2008 by Hurricane Ike and reopened last year much to the relief of many loyal regulars. It has retained its lovely waterfront views and the food has reportedly improved; rave reviews are prompting me to try the tequila shrimp and amandine snapper with lump crabmeat.

2. Board Game Island. It really is all fun and games at this new coffee shop, which, in addition to offering more than 175 games, provides a full menu of coffee drinks, frappes, cold beverages, beer and wine. The food selection is equally diverse and vibrant with options such as coconut grilled cheese, jerk chicken panini, pineapple mango pizza and caramel turtle brownies.

1. Redfish Pool Bar. Adjacent to Nick's Kitchen & Beach Bar (formerly Casey's Seafood), Redfish Pool Bar offers patrons the opportunity to swim, eat and get sloshed (in no particular order). This slideshow certainly has me excited, as does the lounge in the hot tub, frozen drink in hand, simultaneously sweating and shivering.
