Top 10 Restaurants in Cypress

Where is this gorgeous ceviche mixto from? Make it to #1 on the list and find out.

You've got to do some digging to find greatness in the 'burbs, but I am tickled to say that there are some true gems in Cypress. Some are worth a significant drive, too. Two pairs of restaurants on the list are owned by the same people, so obviously they're doing something right.

I do have one question for Cypress restaurateurs: why do most places close at 9 pm instead of 10? In every instance where I was at a restaurant near closing time, there were still patrons inside that had to practically be chased out. It's not a school night for everyone. Perhaps it's time to take a second look at whether or not that hour is profitable.

Soto's Cantina on Grant.... on of the best restaurants in Cypress.  Alicia's is a neat space, but horribly inconsistent... so much so that I won't even waste my time or money at Dario's.

Kilburn's Tavern and Grille has great food and amazing 40 taps of craft beer.  Local beers including Karbach, St Arnolds, no label, Southern Star and others like Founders, Revolver, Southern Tier, (512).  The location on malcomson has an amazing patio

Alicias disappointed yet again. Enchaladas madewith flour tortillas are not enchiladas, not Tex Mex, something we call Wex Mex (white Mexicanfood). They couldn't accommodate my lactos intolerance. I ordered the Chile relleno w/ chicken no cheese. It came with chicken and about an inch of Jack cheese. Saidtheycould

Any idea why Tapas Capriccio closed? I thought that was owned by the Sarmientos, also. They had a strawberry soufflé which was the best dessert I've ever had in a restaurant.

Rockwell Tavern's Burgers are very delicious. The burgers taste like they spent most of their time in a smoke house and then thrown onto the grill at the last minute, to be charred. Comparing them to The Shack is really hard as the styles are so different.

Piqeuo continues to be very inconsistent. We gave up on it. Too expense to have bad experiences. Red Fish Grill on 290 is the best in Cypress. We have been to parties where the Sarmientos hired the Changs of Red Fish Grill to cater! I do really like your list and I am glad to see you comment on the unique places we have here. Keep it up!

Red Fish Grill on 290. Best in Cypress and very unique. The owners of Piqeuo and Mezzanottis hire the Changs to cater parties from time to time.

Rockwell has HORRIBLE service (and I am pretty forgiving when it comes to restaurant service) so I wouldn't have even added them as an honorable mention... even though their food is delicious. There are a couple of places I have never heard of which is kind of neat considering my family gets really sick of eating Mexican food. ;-)  Speaking of though... there is a delicious Taquaria truck at the corner of Huffmeister and 290 (right by the railroad tracks) that is absolutely delicious! It is affectionately called "the taco stand" but I don't recall it's actual name. You should definitely try it out.

Thanks for the suggestions! Those all sound like good ones.

These are all out past me near Beltway 8 and 290, but I will definitely keep them in mind.  No doubt, if it weren't for the much longer commute into town Cypress would be a great place to live.  And thank you for the map!

P.S.  The photo from Brooks' Place made my mouth water.  The one from Piqueo, not so much.  The food may taste wonderful, but that is one ugly plate.

No Love for Rockwell's hamburgers?  Far superior to the Shack's and with the same buns.  Also, Romero's Las Brasas breakfast tacos are some of the best I've had.  Props go to Mekong Grill and their Banh Mi.  Can't find one that good elsewhere in Cypress.

Never heard of any of these places, but I'd suspect an Applebees or Golden Corral would trump all of them.

Glad to see yall venturing outside the beltway. Hope it didn't scar you for life.

I'd remove Alicia's and add Kilburn's.

@chucklively7 Hi there! I wrote this article quite some time ago. If I did this list again today, Kilburn's would be on it. I visited a few months ago and just loved it. I really do take reader recommendations to heart! You're right, the beer list is quite good and the dishes are better than standard pub fare.

They could not make it without cheese as they were all made up and just reheat them. if you just want fajitas this place is fine.

Tapas Capriccio was NOT owned by Gerry Sarmientos - it was owned by a very delightful man by the name of Ray Maxa - he expected perfection - had a vast knowledge of wine - bottom line - he needed more bodies at the table.

My understanding is that the commute back and forth between restaurants proved to just be too much for them. They sold it and sometime after that it closed. Maybe if you ask about it at Mezznotte they can have that strawberry soufflé there sometime! It seems like it would fit nicely on that menu.

The owner of the Shack used to own Rockwall. The burgers are very similar. The chef from the Shack now owns Roosters in Fairfield. Again same burger. :)

@Drawdc Dear Drawdc: We have NEVER hired the Changs for any catering. I am sure their food is great and I would probably have hired them if I didn't have my own restaurants. But your comment is just not true.

@DrawdcI just got around to see the comments posted here and was very surprised to see your comment. I have never hired the Changs to cater any event. I don't know where you get this information but is totally wrong!! I haven't even been to Red Fish Grill, ever!! Not because I don't like it, but simply because I haven't had the chance.

I actually visited the Redfish on 290. The one on 249 made it into my Top 10 in Far Northwest Houston list (which I'm already wanting to re-do as some things have changed). Nigiri was pretty good but the rolls were far too overwrought with sauce. I probably would have done better to stick with their fresh fish entrees.

We had great service at Rockwell Grill - both times we have been - hope you give Melinda and Tiffany a second chance.

There were a couple of young people working the floor at Rockwell's when we were there and we were well taken care of. It probably depends on what night you go and how busy they are.

I might have visited that truck you mentioned. Is it in a gas station parking lot? The truck itself was kind of beat up, but the tacos were yummy.

@Robish Thanks for the comments. I live, technically, in far NW Houston, but very close to Cypress. I agree that it's a great area to live in. It's generally very quiet and safe.

I'm surprised you don't like that plate from Piqueo! I thought that was a great photo. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I guess. Perhaps I'm affected by some good memories of what's in that plate. :)

@Jimi Austin I actually live out here, so these are my stomping grounds. I personally got a quality of life boost from this work, as now I've got some new good places to go (especially on a weeknight when I don't have much time.)

There are many places inside the Loop that I love, but I am pleased to no end that quality and diversity of cuisine can be found out here "in the boonies."

@Katie Ertel  I agree with adding Kilburn's...We've been going there lately...The 4 cheese dip is amazing!!!  Last night, I had the Club Sandwich...actually, I had a 1/4 of it which was very filling!!!

@Katie Ertel I'll have to check them out, Katie. Thanks for the suggestion!

Sorry about the double post. We have sushi at Redfish occasionally but that isn't what I consider their forte. Try the Volcano Bronzini. He does some really creative dishes with an Asian flair. Thanks again for your list. It's fun to discuss.

@Taffinder We have been going to Rockwell for a really long time - since they first opened. The service is usually sub-par, although not terrible. But, the last couple of times we went it just got so bad to a point where we just decided it wasn't worth our time anymore... especially because the Shack has great service and the burgers are very similar.

@phaedra.cook The corn ragout is a must-have at Kilburn's. I get the California Wrap with the corn ragout ... delish!

Hey looks like we are both right - Gerry owned Capriccio from 06-2008 to 01-2011 and Ray owned Tapas Capriccio and filed his dba around 10-2010 and owns the location until about 12 - 2012 when he closed sadly. So prior to that was George at Pallotta's Italian Grill. Never had the honor of meeting Gerry. Thanks for the link Phaedra.

@kelful CORN RAGOUT?! My oh my... there is indeed some creativity going on there. Can't wait to try!
