Upper crust or blue collar, Brooklyn Athletic Club has a lot to offer, while bocce balls roll in the background
When the corner lot on Richmond Avenue that was once home to Zimm's Little Deck opened up, restaurateur Shepard Ross pounced. He telephoned Chef Jeff Axline in Austin and once again, the two of them partnered for a new venture.

In an homage to Brooklyn and Houston, the Brooklyn Athletic Club has extensive wine and beer lists and stylish cocktails. But as Kaitlin Steinberg writes in this week's restaurant review, there's also a food truck in the courtyard and picnic tables.

Ross and Axline previously worked together at Glass Wall and BRC Gastropub, where Axline created a Texana menu to complement Ross's cozy craft beer haven. Both eventually split from BRC, but now they're together again.

The concept for Brooklyn Athletic Club came from a club that Ross's grandparents went to in Brookline. Axline created an "Americana" menu complete with a meatball sub and Axline's famous mac and cheese.

The result is a mix of gourmet and comfort food, white linen napkins and a side of bocce ball (retained from the Zimm's Little Deck days).
