Upcoming Events: Cinco de My-Oh-My-Oh
If you don't already have plans for Sunday, May 5, look no further: Houston has muchas fiestas for Cinco de Mayo -- so many, in fact, that our own Abby Downing-Beaver has a whole guide to spending your Cinco in style.
Activities include everything from the annual Cinco de Mayo Parade downtown on Sunday at 10 a.m. to a Miss Cinco de Mayo Houston contest at new Midtown rooftop hotspot Proof Bar. And if nothing else, you know that all of our Top 10 Tex-Mex Restaurants in Houston will have parties going on Sunday, too.
Next weekend, indulge in all-you-can-eat crawfish for a cause when Goode Company's Armadillo Palace hosts the Craw-wish Boil benefiting the Texas Gulf Coast & Louisiana Make-A-Wish Foundation. On Saturday, May 11, you'll get plenty of boiled crawfish and beer to chow down on - and you can dance it all off to live music from The Derailers and Curtis Poullard & the Creole Zydeco. The party runs from noon to 4 p.m. and tickets can be purchased for $25 online or $30 at the door.
National Escargot Day is coming up on Friday, May 24, and two Houston area restaurants want to help you celebrate the gustatory pleasures of the simple gastropod. The snails should be appreciated all the more, considering the worldwide shortage of snails that's plagued escargot-lovers this year.
Henry V. Thiel for Pesca World Seafood Restaurant Escargot will be a week-long special at Pesca World Seafood.
French restaurant Bistro Provence will feature a special menu of snail dishes including traditional escargots served in their shells and swimming in sizzling garlic butter; roti de boeuf aux escargots et echalottes (garlic-studded beef filet with sauteed escargots and shallots); and the Bistro's popular Pizza Nonni (snail pizza) fresh from its own brick oven.
Over in River Oaks, owner and chef Alberto Alfonzo will be extending National Escargot Day into a full week at his restaurant, Pesca World Seafood. The week-long special at the seafood restaurant will feature escargots with lighted toasted brioche.
"I prepare my escargot with sun dried tomatoes and artichokes in a lemon cream sauce," says Alfonzo, who'll be serving the dish for $10 from Tuesday, May 21 through Saturday, May 25.
