Derby Day at Anvil Bar & Refuge

Anvil will open its doors a few hours early tomorrow to host a Kentucky Derby viewing party complete with the classic cocktails of "the greatest two minutes in sports." The menu for the Derby day will be overseen by Alba Huerta -- owner of upcoming cocktail bar Julep -- who'll be featuring two juleps among five specialty drinks.
Huerta's Southern Style Julep is made of cognac, Jamaican rum, mint, and sugar, and you'll also be able to get a Classic Julep made with simply bourbon, mint and sugar. Also on the menu: a Derby Cocktail, a Seelbach Cocktail and a Bourbon and Barley Fruit Punch. Anyone who shows up in derby attire -- whether a seersucker suit or a picture hat -- will receive his or her first julep on the house.
Houstonia Community BBQ at D&T Drive-Inn
Saturday, 4 to 8 p.m.
Later that day, help celebrate the reopening of D&T Drive Inn at the Houstonia Community BBQ, featuring barbecue author and Houstonia food editor Robb Walsh. For $25, you'll get a plate of 24-hour whole-roasted hog barbecue, potato salad, baked beans, coleslaw, and cobbler. But not just any cobbler.
Four of the city's best chefs will be competing in Houstonia's Blackberry Cobbler Smackdown. Your $25 ticket will also let you taste all four cobblers and vote on your favorite for Cobbler Champion. To wash it all down, Deep Eddy Vodka will have special cocktails on hand and Saint Arnold will be popping tops on beers all afternoon long.
El Gran Cinco at El Gran Malo
Sunday, 11 a.m. to 2 a.m.
On Sunday, the best Cinco de Mayo party in town will be going down all day long at El Gran Malo. Chef Randy Rucker will be serving his own twist on a classic crawfish boil while FOX Masterchef contestant Alvin Schultz will be pouring liquid nitrogen-cooled frozen margaritas throughout the day. An adult "lemonade stand" will help you beat the heat with special sangrias, Jell-o shots and liquor-infused fruits, while Karbach Brewery will keep the brews flowing all day long.
Paulie's 15th Anniversary Party
Sunday, 5 to 10 p.m.
If balls-out Cinco de Mayo fiestas aren't your thing, join Paulie's for a more casual celebration on Sunday evening as the Montrose restaurant celebrates its 15th anniversary. Owner Paul Petronella will be hosting the Pi Pizza food truck outside to compliment his own menu of Italian favorites inside. Free cocktails will be served by cocktail pop-up "Dr. E. Gregious & Prof. Felonious' Traveling Circus and Elixirs" and free beer comes courtesy of Saint Arnold Brewery. Live music will also be performed all evening long by artists including Whitney Mower and Deseret Band and Reverberation.
Blake's BBQ on Burgerland
Monday, 8 to 9 p.m.
This last event is on a Monday, but it's a good one -- just keep the weekend going Monday night. The 30-year-old Blake's BBQ, a favorite for its burgers as much as its barbecue, will be featured on the Travel Channel's new show, Burgerland. To celebrate, the restaurant will be hosting a viewing party on the patio for its loyal customers from 8 to 9 p.m. with plenty of food specials to go along with the burger joint's TV debut.
