For all of the wonderful things that our Houston farmers markets offer, a consistent daily location isn't one of them.

On one hand, it's incredibly convenient that there are farmers markets spread all over town for those who can't drive downtown on Wednesdays to catch the City Hall farmers market, for example. On the other hand, there's something nice about farmers markets like those in Dallas, where you know that the vendors will be waiting there for you nearly seven days a week. There are pros and cons to both sides, of course.

The good news, however, is that one of our largest and longest-running farmers markets is about to be open all weekend long -- great news for anyone who was never quite able to make it out to the Urban Harvest Eastside Farmers Market on Saturdays.

Starting on Sunday, April 28, the Eastside Farmers Market at 3000 Richmond will be open Sundays from noon until 4 p.m. As with its Saturday hours of 8 a.m. to noon, the Sunday market will be open year-round, rain or shine.

Customers can expect to find many of their usual vendor favorites as well as a few newcomers. There will be 21 vendors on opening day, with others being added in the following weeks.

"The 3000 Richmond Avenue at Eastside location has become synonymous with great local produce and farm goods as well as locally prepared foods, hot breakfast items and coffee, so it seemed natural to host the Sunday market here," said Scott Howard, board president of Urban Harvest.

"The location provides lots of space for vendors and shoppers and there is plenty of convenient adjacent parking. And its afternoon hours from noon to 4 p.m. are perfect for lunch and shopping after church and for those too busy to make the market on Saturday."

Opening day activities on April 28 include:

  • A cooking demo at 1 p.m. with chef German Mosquera from Restaurant Cinq at La Colombe d'Or, featuring local products fresh from the market that day.
  • Soni Holladay, horitculuralist for the Houston Museum of Natural Science, will bring butterflies, bugs, and caterpillars for the kids to see.
  • Chicks and chickens from Renaissance Chicken will be at the market for kids and families to interact with and to learn about chickens and egg farming.

Confirmed vendors for opening day include:

  • Fraiche Mobile Kitchen: brunch items
  • Canopy/Shade: brunch items
  • Java Pura: coffee
  • Ripe Cuisine: healthy fare
  • Zierau Fine Foods: TexMex and casseroles
  • Nisha's Quick n' Easy: Indian food
  • Nougat: French-style artisanal sweets
  • Doggie Snack Bar: dog treats
  • Lifestyle Foods: seasonal sauces
  • Proverbs Farm: goat cheese and goat milk soap
  • Hog Creek Farm: goat milk soap, pork
  • Renaissance Chicken: eggs
  • Airline Seafood: seafood
  • Bee Wilde Honey: honey and beeswax products
  • Houston Regional Market Growers: small farmers and gardeners
  • Pine Valley Produce: tomatoes, cucumbers
  • Garden Dreams: seasonal produce and jams
  • Sinfull Bakery: vegan baked sweets

  • Orchid Obsession: orchids and bromeliads
  • Texas T Kobe: hot sliders for lunch and kobe beef cuts

This Sunday market comes at a small cost, however: The Highland Village Farmers Market is now closed due to low attendance. Urban Harvest hopes that moving its Sunday market to Eastside will remedy that problem -- and I expect that it will.

In addition, Urban Harvest will continue to run its popular City Hall Farmers Market every Wednesday at 400 Rusk from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

I think the location for Highland Village was nice but not convenient to get to, to park, and the space was limited even though it provided shade.  This is a perfect remedy to the situation and beneficial for the late sleepers :).
