Restaurants Behaving Badly: Maggie Rita's Calls Houston Woman "Fat" on Facebook

mrscreencap.jpg
Newman got in a parting jab of her own.
Newman didn't notice the response when it came in close to 10 p.m. on Tuesday night; a friend notified her about it the next morning. Newman was as shocked at the below-the-belt fat joke as she was at the fact that Maggie Rita's hadn't deleted the comment. But she's not deleting it either. Newman says she wants people to see Maggie Rita's over the top reaction for themselves.

"I'm leaving it up there for anyone to see."

The downtown [and last extant] location of Maggie Rita's could not be reached for comment, and a Facebook message sent to the Maggie Rita's page was unanswered. We'll update this post if we hear back from the restaurant.

The fact they stole a joke to insult someone really re-enforces the Mencia® brand.

"I thought fat people were supposed to be jolly!"  I dont care who you are, thats funny right there. I am totally remembering that and using it in the future

She looks fat to me.  What's the problem?

why is amanda picking on a business that already closed?? calling them out.... should she be going to MC'D's getting one of those chicken snack wraps with less calories

1.The restaurant sucked and was overpriced. 2. She is fat. 3. She isn't a customer so why should they be nice to her? 4. Fat people know good food.

Its offensive that women pick the restaurants? Or its offensive that they pick them because of how good margaritas are? Because that's kinda the way it is........ and fat people should be jolly....

Well all I can say is that I did not find anything offensive about what he said. You hope for somebody's business to fail and then you want a positive comment. Get over it and yeah by the way obesity in this city is getting out of hand.

You know,   I really don't think much of people who laugh at business closing and people being out of work.

It's day 1025 of Obama's "Recovery Summer".  U.S. employers hired at the slowest pace in nearly a year in March, adding only 88,000 jobs to non-farm payrolls, with steep job cuts in the retail and government sectors...Unemployment fell to 7.6 percent in March from 7.7 percent in February, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said. But that was mainly due to 496,000 people leaving the labor force completely. The labor-force participation rate -- the percentage of people eligible to be working or looking for work -- fell to 63.3 percent, the lowest since 1979. Had that number simply held stable, the unemployment rate might have been higher.

Yeah... laughing at business being closed and folks being out of work.... totally cool and witty in this day and age.

I had already made the decision to never patronize them with my business following the Eater Houston interview. Now, I too am glad that they're unable to open locations. Hopefully, they'll completely pull out of our city. We don't need thank rank, vile, and contemptuous attitude towards customers or women defiling Houston.

"I thought restaurants were suppose to" want jolly people rather than alienate them. You know, because from Maggie Rita's logic, they must eat a lot. I understand the frustration and stress of having several locations close down, but for fuck's sake that is uncalled for and i'm glad they're failing.

I still want to know what compelled her to comment on a interview a year old. Especially since she never visited the place.

I think it was pretty clever. If you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything at all. Although it may have been below the belt for her, you shouldn't say something insulting and not get called out on it. That's just rude. Shut your pie hole and problem is gone. :)

I lol'd. It's wildly inappropriate, but it was so inappropriate as to be kinda hilarious too.

What compelled her to comment on an article for a year ago?

Seems to me she started it.. If you can't take it, don't call em out!

lol, of course women make the decisions, and of course they make them based on who has the best margaritas, but your not supposed to say that, then their husbands will know!!!!

Their food was not good. And I like a lot of Mexican food!

Missy Jane

Wow I'd never heard of that place but now I'm glad I never tried them. Both of my grandmothers are native Mexican Americans who could cook Mexican food better than ANY restaurant. And I don't freakin' drink margaritas. >:(

You have to be a pretty big screw up to not be able to sell Mexican food in Texas.

I think they were calling Houstonians fat, not just her. But other than that, it seems like they're not the best at marketing. (And if they think Taco Bell is our idea of good Mexican food, they're total morons.)

I agree all the way with rogue.4jc They both stated facts so what's the problem?

amusquiz

First: not to defend them or anything, but I don't think they were calling HER fat, I think they were calling Houstonians fat. As in, "one of the fattest cities in America" fat.

Second: Seriously, they think Taco Bell is our idea of Mexican food? HA! This is Houston, Texas...not St. Louis, Missouri.

Ah, nevermind, just read the article.

Is she fatter than Alexandra Smoots-Hogan?

She's not nearly as fat as Monacow Moracowa the first known bovine transexual, sadly infected with BSE.

Wait a minute. Is she the same Newman that appeared on Seinfeld?  The resemblance is uncanny.

rogue.4jc

I'm not sure I understand what the problem is.. I mean both sides spoke the truth. The restaurant was right in commenting about women liking magaritas and people thinking taco bell is real mexican food.. she is also within her rights to post on FB about her disgust by the comments.. and the restaurant is also right in stating her large size.

Like I said... everyone spoke the truth from start to finish so WHAT is the issue?

It's funny when a person who never has even been to a place goes out of their way to rip it down on THEIR Facebook page. It's not like she said it on her own page. She maliciously went out of her way to attack them on Their page. The customer isn't always right. I fully support what the restaurant did...

@ltrasczak It's funny because they are a bad business that doesn't deserve this city. This has nothing to do with Obama, this has all to do with bad PR. Plenty of businesses are thriving right now in our city. Especially the food industry, so if you can't make it here, there's probably something really wrong with the way you're conducting business.

@ltrasczak it's funny because Carlos Mencia is co-owner lol.

@amusquiz Right? Houston has some of the best mexican food around. Any place North of Texas CRAP mexican food. We also have awesome Asian food :)

the issue is that she maliciously did it on their business page...

@5050rights.org She ripped them because they ripped all Houston women, and said that Houston women don't care about good food. They started it. They insulted women. Then they lost almost all of their locations, because Houston is not as stupid as Maggie Rita's thought.

@Anrkist @ltrasczak   Tell that to the waiters, cooks, and cashiers who are out of work in a cr@ppy economy.   I'm sure they find the whole "I need to find  a job before the landlord throws us out on the street" thing just hilarious.
