Top 5 Special Edition Easter Candies

Like candy? Easter should be your second favorite day of the year (after Halloween) given the plethora of special and/or limited-edition confections that emerge in celebration of the holiday. Last October I scoured the shelves for the best varieties for All Hallow's Eve; I've done the same this March. Here are my top five special edition Easter candies to buy for that special someone (including yourself).

5. Jelly Belly Dips. Though technically issued year-round, Jelly Belly Dips are nevertheless so festive you'll want to sprinkle at least a few in your Easter basket or on some pastel cupcakes. The coconut flavor pairs especially well with the dark chocolate coating, and unlike traditional coconut eggs, you can eat 'em (literally) by the handful.

4. Junior Mints Pastels. Melt-in-your-mouth white peppermint creams in seasonal colors "robin's egg blue" and "sunny yellow." Perfect for brightening up the candy bowl or adding some color to your movie candy experience.

3. Reese's BIG Peanut Butter Egg. The regular PB eggs are fine and dandy for snackin', but for a far more intense and delicious chocolate-peanut butter experience, grab a fork and get to work on this massive ovum. Easily finished in one sitting if you consume with milk and after a few Easter cocktails.

Red Velvet Eggs
2. Russell Stover's Red Velvet Eggs. Apparently Russell Stover issued Red Velvet Santas this past Christmas and Red Velvet Hearts for Valentine's Day. Lord knows how I missed out two holidays in a row. Now I'm making up for lost time by stocking up on these puppies. With an exterior coating of dark chocolate and a light red interior flavored with "real" red velvet cake mix, this treat is more baked good than confection, and a fine change of pace from other, more saccharine, gooey eggs.

1. White Chocolate Carrot Cake M&Ms. So much going on in one little spheroid. The ever-enterprising R&D department at Mars, Inc. have once again come up with some crazy-ass seasonal flavor for what was originally (do you even remember?) simple milk chocolates in candy shells. These candies are larger in girth than plain M&Ms, with a thick stuffing of white chocolate laced with cinnamon, nutmeg and a few other, indiscernible spices. No substitute for real carrot cake, but you try shoving a slice of that in an Easter basket filled with plastic grass.
