Room Service? Yes, One B.R.A.T. Platter, Please

Last week, I was supposed to visit Skeeter's Mesquite Grill, but much to my chagrin found myself under the weather. A bit of bad beef? A blot of mottled mustard? Probably actually some milk that was past its prime. (Annoying; I was so craving a burger!).

Regardless, I was not feeling my best. And in an attempt to make myself feel better, I tried to think about other times in my life when I felt much, much sicker. And that's when I remembered a certain 48-hour stretch in India when I was quite sure I was dying of cholera. (But was actually just suffering the effects of eating less-than-fresh street food.)

After making it through the worst my case of Montezuma's Revenge, I needed to eat but knew I had to be careful lest I wake the sleeping giant that was my lower bowels. What I needed was Banana, Rice, Applesauce and Toast, otherwise known as B.R.A.T. I learned about this soothing collection of foods when I was taking care of a sick toddler, and since then it's never failed to help me during that tricky transition period between earth-shattering gastrointestinal distress and full recovery.

The hotel kitchen was more than accommodating and sent up a tray with a bowl of sliced bananas, a mound of white rice, a dish of applesauce and a plate of dry white toast. I nibbled my way back to health and thanked the staff effusively.

Now, looking back on that episode, I can't help but think 1) I probably wasn't the first incautious white girl to suffer stomach trouble on the road and 2) hotels* should offer the B.R.A.T. Platter a permanent place on their room-service menus. Because the last thing you want to do when you're sick is run to the grocery store. And if your family/circle of friends is anything like mine, these maladies spread quickly, leaving everyone down for the count.

In fact, maybe hotels should offer an entire separate menu of mild dishes for those suffering from stomach trouble. Readers, without going into too much graphic detail about your own, um, illness experiences, do you have any food suggestions that should be included on such a menu? Collections of vittles with cute acronyms (i.e., B.R.A.T.) especially appreciated.

*And, let's please emphasize, not just hotels in foreign locales because Lord knows diarrhea can strike anywhere and at any time.
