Faking It: Make Your Own McDonald's Shamrock Shake at Home
Springtime and St. Patrick's Day are just around the corner. Take one look at the McDonald's menu and you will realize that it is indeed that time of year -- the Shamrock Shake is back. This bright green minty-vanilla milkshake has been offered around St. Patrick's Day since the '70s. I always get excited when restaurants offer seasonal items, especially seasonal milkshakes. What's not to love about a St. Paddy's Day-themed milkshake?

Because this item is going to be gone before we know it, I decided to create my own Shamrock Shake. Although you won't be able to get your hands on the Shamrock Shake sauce, you can still mix things up (literally) with a few other ingredients to make your Shamrock Shake extra special.
The base of the Shamrock Shake is, obviously, milk and ice cream, the two ingredients that create a milkshake. So, first place one cup of creamy vanilla ice cream into a blender. You want to make sure that the ice cream is cold enough to stay thick when you blend it with the other ingredients, but you don't want it too cold, otherwise it won't be smooth and creamy.
Add about a cup (or more) of vanilla ice cream to make a personal shake.
Next, add about 3/4 cup of milk. This is the perfect amount of milk to ice cream because it helps the milkshake come together in a drinkable form, but it doesn't make it too runny.
After you have placed the base ingredients into the blender, it's time to add the special ingredients that make this milkshake a Shamrock Shake.
Place about 1/4 teaspoon of mint extract and about five to eight drops of green food coloring into the blender. Use mint extract, not peppermint extract, because you want the spearmint flavor, not a peppermint flavor -- it will taste too Christmasy.
You can blend all of these ingredients together to get your basic Shamrock Shake, or you can add a few extra goodies to make a personalized Shamrock Shake. If you really like the mint flavoring of the shake but wish it had a little bit more chocolate, add crushed Andes mints or a few frozen Thin Mint Girl Scout cookies. When you blend them with the shake, you'll get a stronger chocolate-mint flavor and some pretty speckles of chocolate throughout the shake.
Add a handful of Andes mint chips to make your shake extra chocolatey and minty.
If you want to make this shake an adult beverage, try adding Baileys Irish Cream and either reduce the amount of mint extract, or eliminate it altogether.
Once you are done blending your shake with your choice ingredients, top it with some whipped cream and a dash of green sprinkles. Now you can have your Shamrock Shake all year long.
