Houston's Best Ribs, Tex-Mex and Steaks -- According to You, Social Media Maven

What if you could ask social media sites such as Twitter, Foursquare, Facebook and TripAdvisor what Tex-Mex restaurant they'd recommend as the best in Houston? All at once? Without having to mess with that whole following-people-and-enduring-their-boring-status-updates part?

Triposo is here for you.

Triposo is a travel adviser Web site created by some ex-Google smart guys who also happen to have developed a ton -- 85 at last count -- of cool travel guide apps as well as individual travel apps for a slew of different international destinations from Tokyo to Turkey.

As part of its travel guides, Triposo combs social media in each city to determine the best spots for sightseeing, shacking up, getting cultured and -- of course -- eating and drinking. It lists those bars and restaurants in order of most popular -- i.e., mentioned most frequently and most positively according to social media chatter -- which you can then sort by cuisine and distance.

Triposo offered to compile some of that data for the Houston Press into interesting listicles of four favorite local cuisines: burgers, ribs, Tex-Mex and steaks. What do Houston Facebook and Foursquare users think are the best places to get each?

The only truly surprising part of the data sets that followed was this e-mailed apology from Triposo's amused PR team:

"For some reason, Triposo wasn't able to data on burgers," she wrote, further venturing that it was likely due to the overwhelming popularity of burgers in the Bayou City. (I knew you liked burgers, y'all, but not enough to break a finely tuned piece of software.)

I can only assume that Da Marco and Zelko list short ribs on their online menus, as neither are places one thinks of for BBQ ribs. We'll just keep Gatlin's as our little secret, OK?

El Real, Chuy's and Andy's at the top of the Tex Mex list? Yikes! I hate the thought of travelers following those recommendations and getting the wrong idea about Houston.

Never been to Andy's, but I'd put Chuy's and El Real up near the top. Chuy's is one of the few Tex-Mex places whose food has edges. Try the hatch sauce. It has a decent heat to it, if you're into that sort of thing. And the green chile rice is by far the best side of rice I've had at a Tex-Mex place in Houston. It actually has flavor.

@Bruce_Are @irockyoursocks  Chuy's? Are you being funny? It's the white suburban man's conception of Tex Mex. Rice and one sauce doesn't justify its existence.

@Bruce_Are @Donnegal  They're the ones who call it a dip, I think. Which is an uber-white, suburban invention. "Have a dip for your chip". It's the utterly ordinary Ranch dressing based 'Creamy Jalapeno Dip' that draws raves and epitomizes the Chuy's culinary experience. The rest of the experience is crazy Elvis and kitsch, wacky and far-out to maybe someone at My Table.

I was not aware that you were the spokesperson for white people. The dip? Seriously? That "dip" doesn't even come with the chips (any more)--you have to ask for it.

You don't like Chuy's because you don't like the free dip that is available upon request and you don't like Chuy's because white people like white meat and Chuy's serves white meat.

Do tell what your faves would be. I'd really like to know who you think has the best dip.

@Bruce_Are @Keuhnert @irockyoursocks I think he meant it's white meat mostly, as dark meat is dirty and greasy (white suburban mentality) and kinda white bread, in that the dips taste like Ranch dressing with minor modifications. And if you have to use the descriptor "high-end" for Tex Mex it's basically game over

White people eat there? Is that the best you can do?  Have you been Chuy's? I've noticed that most negative reviews of Chuy's are nondescript and contain almost no specifics. 

I could recommend the fajitas, the green chile rice, several of their sauces, tortilla soup, stacked enchiladas, etc.  And it's not bland, unlike a lot of Tex-Mex.  Try the stacked enchiladas with extra hatch sauce.

I eat at taquerias a lot more than at Tex-Mex joints, but when I'm in the mood for high-end Tex-Mex then Chuy's is a good choice.
