Cupcakes are hands-down my favorite treats: personal cakes with the perfect amount of frosting to cake. Not to mention, they're super cute with pretty piped frosting on top.

However, as much as I love decorating the top of each cupcake with a swirl of frosting and possibly some sprinkles, I have found several ways to decorate your cupcakes with a sweet topping other than frosting.

Here is my top-five list of cupcake toppings you can use to add a sweet finish to your cupcakes.

5. Melted Peanut Butter and Nutella

Instead of making a peanut butter frosting or chocolate frosting, combine creamy and sticky peanut butter and Nutella by melting the two in the microwave.

Once the peanut butter and Nutella are smooth and begin to blend together, spoon a good-sized layer on top of each cupcake. The glaze will spread across the cupcake, creating a colorful blend of dark brown and light brown. You'll definitely need a glass of milk with this stick-to-the-roof-of-your-mouth cupcake topping.

4. Melted Jelly or Jam

Jelly and jam are wonderful ingredients to add a natural, fruity sweetness to your cupcakes. If you're in a jam (punny!) for time, simply melt your favorite jam or jelly in the microwave -- it's even better to use ones with fruit pieces -- and top each cupcake with a spoonful. The juice from the melted jam or jelly will spread across the cupcakes, creating a sweet and colorful glaze.

3. Honey and Sprinkles

Instead of creating the ordinary glaze of powdered sugar and milk, simply heat honey until spreadable, then dip the top of each cupcake into the honey and roll in colorful sprinkles. The sprinkles will stick to the tops of the cupcakes, making the sweet treats pop with a rainbow of colors. The honey is sticky enough for the sprinkles to not fall off and is sweet enough to give you a sugary cupcake.

2. Powdered Sugar Design

If you want to let the flavors of the cake shine, then simply dust powdered sugar on top, but create a cool design. Create stencils of any shape you want (hearts, stars, circles, smiley faces) and place the paper on top of the cupcake, then dust with powdered sugar. After the cupcakes have been covered with powdered sugar, remove the stencils and reveal the outlined shapes. This is a great decoration for a dinner party or nice get-together with friends.

1. Marshmallows

If you don't have enough time to create a marshmallow cream frosting, just place a marshmallow on top of each cupcake during the last minute of baking. As the cupcakes finish, the marshmallows will slightly melt and cover the tops with a sticky, sugary topping. This topping is perfect for cupcakes you want to eat right away. Make the cupcake just like a S'more by dusting the tops of the marshmallows with crushed graham crackers.
